When the game was originally teased I had some high hopes for it, but since I'm not a preorder fag I wanted to wait. When it did come out it seemed lack luster to me, and the reviews were all over the place from critics and users both.
Now, I've played Control by this same studio. One would think that an action game where you get powers from SCPs would be great, however it turns out to be fairly boring. This adds to my skepticism.
While both Control and Death Stranding is published by the same company, Control isn't developed by kojima productions. Control's by Remedy, the guys who made Max Payne 1&2, Alan Wake and Quantum Break.
Seeing as how reviews of Death Stranding is all over the place, your best bet is to maybe try the game yourself. You can probably sail the high seas for it. The game, as per kojima himself, is about bridging connections to people as opposed to having borders and walls. It's basically a leftist game. Some quotes about the game from kojima:
President Trump right now is building a wall. Then you have Brexit, where the UK is trying to leave the EU, and it feels like there are lots of walls and people thinking only about themselves in the world.
In Death Stranding, we’re using bridges to represent connection – there are options to use them or break them. It’s about making people think about the meaning of connection.
