Microsoft has revealed it will purchase Activision-Blizzard, the gaming giant behind several highly popular franchises, in a record-breaking $68.7 billion all-cash deal. The deal shatters the previous industry record set just last week when Take-Two offered Zynga $12.7 billion for their acquisition.
According to a blog post by Xbox head Phil Spencer, until the transaction is finalized Microsoft, Xbox and Activision-Blizzard, along with all of their studios and subsidiaries, will continue to operate independently, with Bobby Kotick retaining his position as CEO of Activision-Blizzard. However, once the acquisition is complete, all will answer to Spencer as the overall CEO.
He went on to state that upon deal closure, Microsoft will offer Activision-Blizzard games, both old and new, within the Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass, as subscriber numbers have reached over 25 million people. The merger is bound to increase that number even further, as Activision-Blizzard is responsible for several hugely successful franchises such as Call of Duty, Warcraft, Diablo, Starcraft, Overwatch, Crash Bandicoot, Guitar Hero, Spyro, Candy Crush and more.
This is yet another massive buyout for Microsoft, who has acquired Bethesda Softworks (ZeniMax Media) last year.
