It's like that movie big hero six, where they keep trying to grab a mask used to control the robots, but could never quite get it.

So instead the solution they employ in the climax is destroying destroying robots themselves, reducing the mask to nothing but a purely decorative accessory.

If you want to get at an untouchable opponent who is untouchable because of those they work through, you switch your focus to those who you can touch, and work your way up the chain until those at the top is left powerless.
