I'm in FL, too but I also have mandatory fun with the wife's ginormous family for New Year's. We did do some stone crab last year, though, so I can't say much. I think I prefer them warm to cold. I know you can do either, and it's probably sacrilege to prefer them warm, but whatevs.
My favorite is still the ole blue crab boiled in garlic and butter. Garlic crabs are my jam.
