Probably inspired by the "self-immolation" of Tibetan Buddhists. Literally just set themselves on fire in protest of China. IDK why they think that would be more effective than a popularly supported armed revolution. I know they don't have many guns. Some people there do. They could also find out how to make a Luty. Stupid to just burn yourself to death and most people will forget about it in 48 hours to a week....
