Take for example myxoma which was used to infect wild rabbits in Australia, designed to kill all wild rabbits. It affected some 2B wild rabbits in 2 years wiping out 99.9%, even then some still survived.
Now imagine a virus that kills less than 1%, almost everyone is probably immune to it.
