I always take anything Miles Mathis writes with a large grain of salt, but he makes some good points and gives some very persuasive evidence in this article. Mathis also asks whether Lovecraft's contribution to literature was to intentionally weaken Western culture and create a paradigm where there is no objective reality and everything is random and chaotic, and he makes a good argument for that too.

Lovecraft died alone, miserable, unloved and in horrible pain from eating only bread for years.
I highly doubt he was trying to push some kind of high concept agenda like this.
