It always seems backwards, being able to observe the nuclei of other galaxies such as M87 a couple years ago, but not so much our own (millions of stars in the way). If we could actually get space exploration underway somehow, the second order of business after establishing colonies should be elevating probes above our galactic plane so they can get a better look inward.
