They're just over the top pure sweet. I am shocked that there's not booze made from these things. They grow like crazy where we live, and my wife's always picking up broken off bits to plant... she can't stand to let anything die. I love that crazy broad, I think she;s kept me alive all these years, for that matter.

These ones are barely sweet. Orange ones I tried before were sweet, but these red ones aren't. You can make wine from them, I watched an italian guy do it in youtube a few hours ago. There's also white ones but I haven't seen those yet.

Shiner Brewing in Texas makes a fruit beer out of them most every summer.

My immediate thought was: I wonder what they'd taste like as wine.

sweet, true, but...

DANGER!!! NOTE TO ALL HERE! Eating Succulents caused mankind misery for thousands of years! Destroys tooth enamel!

Cacti create a special crystal , like fine grit, throughout its body with nano-particle sharp edges in supertiny crystals in its flesh to ensure few desert animals will ever evolve to eat cactus.

You do not notice its tooth destruction immediately.

Tooth enamel is hard , it is hydroxyapatite. But Cactus is harder.

Dug up native american bones in southwest from hundreds of years ago show horrific teeth damage from cactus chewing.

Occasional cactus eating (Mexican napolitos aka "huevos con nopales") can be repaired by morning saliva the next morning on the outside from re-mineralization, if a human sips no water for 25 minutes after waking up, but not if too often eating cactus.

you can dine on cactus in 20% of south west mexican diners north of the border : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nopalito but its young , pickled, yet still ruins teeth if chronically consumed.

I cannot find any simple web pages describing any of my claims, not one. But my claims are 100% solid facts. Botany books all focus on alkaloid defenses, but the cactus has more than that to dissuade mammals.

I found ONE paper from 2016 that says for TEETH of animals cactus has 0% of calcium oxalate in the fruiting bodies meant for animal dispersal and consumption. They carefully measured all sections of the cactus species thay cared about :

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27451142/

Highest crystal contents were measured in greenhouse stems, followed by the fruit peels. While very few crystals were quantified in in vitro plants, they were not detected in the fruit pulp at all, which is of advantage for its human consumption and could be linked to mechanisms of seed dispersal through animals

This means the dead sad tooth-ruined skeletons from 500 years ago across USA anthropologists USED TO DIG UP should have eaten less cactus and ONLY the fruiting bodies like the picture the OP showed. I guess juice and pulp of fruit does not harm mammals.

Fossilized shit analysis of the tooth-destroyed native americans showed they all ate far too much cactus and shit out the Calcium oxalate crystals in Archaic coprolites (Fossilized shit). One and One makes two.

They might have been chronically chewing AGAVES in some ancient feces piles not DNA tested. AGAVES ruin teeth just like the OPs cactus does :

2015: Agave Chewing and Dental Wear

https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0133710

Rodents evolved to eat prickly pear and bore into it, but rodents have ever-growing front teeth.

Humans will perish toothless if they subsist on cactus too often.

It is possible the fruiting sweet buds of Opuntia (shown by OP) are meant to be eaten and dispersed by mammals, and have less stony micro crystals

OMG! I was wondering why nobody fermented them - I guess your name is nobody!

[ - ] Mr7Slug 5 points 3.7 yearsAug 26, 2021 22:53:20 ago (+5/-0)

Nice! How would you describe the flavor? Whats it is similar to? Local mexican restaurant near me recently started serving grilled cactus, its pretty darn good. Not a cactus knowledgeable person myself, but its the flat ones, spines removed, and grilled. Slimy as fuck, but very tasty.

[ - ] Kozel 7 points 3.7 yearsAug 26, 2021 23:01:39 ago (+7/-0)

Like a kiwi watermellon. This red one is not very sweet. There's an orange one I harvested last year which is sweeter. The flesh where it connects to the cactus leaf is just slightly salty, somewhat like the cacti leaf. The inside with seed pods is watery and dissolves. The seed pods are hard and non-toxic, you can swallow them if you want your insides cleaned. Then the flesh surrounding is chewy like a cantaloupe, but a lot softer.

I've picked a cacti leaf a few times. You gotta pick a young one. They're ok in a salad. Better cut in slices and fried in butter/oil complementing some eggs. I think I'd rather just leave the leaf to grow some more pears.

Dang, lol, i dont think id like them, two foods i dont enjoy, kiwis and watermelons. Though the salty part intrigues me.

[ - ] Kozel 7 points 3.7 yearsAug 26, 2021 23:21:22 ago (+7/-0)

i dont enjoy, kiwis and watermelons

ok, stalin.

[ - ] Mr7Slug 5 points 3.7 yearsAug 26, 2021 23:27:11 ago (+5/-0)

I know, everyone is always like "whaaaaaat!?" When i say that. I dont dislike watermelon, its just a waste of my time. And i havent had a kiwi for... 15 years or so, i think the last one i ate might have been rotten or something, it was horrible and i hated it so much i just absolutely never want to taste it again.

But maybe I'm just satan incarnate or something, cuz i also absolutely haaaaate fried chicken. That and my preference to shoot watermelon instead of eating it usually baffles people.

Im a weird guy. I like to eat sushi, wild game, pumpkin puree in my homemade spaghetti sauce, grilled bananas, a head of raw garlic by itself every day... jesus christ I'm weird... now that i write it down... whats wrong with me? Lol

Maybe he just hates New Zealand.

...and niggers?

[ - ] Mr7Slug 4 points 3.7 yearsAug 26, 2021 23:27:51 ago (+4/-0)

I also hate fried chicken

[ - ] lord_nougat 3 points 3.7 yearsAug 26, 2021 23:29:00 ago (+3/-0)

I love watermelons and fried chicken and just hate other people who like those same things.

...but I'm a drunk Irish/injun, so wtf do I know.

[ - ] Mr7Slug 1 point 3.7 yearsAug 26, 2021 23:34:12 ago (+1/-0)

We are like bizzaro world cousins. Im a bit of a euro mutt, Scottish, English, German, Dutch, about equal parts, and the rest is injun, enough that i dont sunburn for long and people have asked if im Japanese before.

How do you feel about grape drank?

I'm indifferent, leaning towards no thanka.

[ - ] lord_nougat 3 points 3.7 yearsAug 26, 2021 23:38:09 ago (+3/-0)

I'm right there with you on grape drank. Ugh.

Might as well just have wine. REAL drank made our of real grapes!

[ - ] Mr7Slug 2 points 3.7 yearsAug 26, 2021 23:40:04 ago (+2/-0)

Ill eat the grapes and drink some mead instead. Havent had a wine i like yet.

[ - ] Kozel 0 points 3.7 yearsAug 26, 2021 23:52:28 ago (+0/-0)

I can't think of a food I hate. I like all food. Stop being bigoted towards food.

[ - ] lord_nougat 2 points 3.7 yearsAug 26, 2021 23:26:27 ago (+2/-0)

Whoah, trippy! I just assumed that they were all just overwhelming over the top sweet. The purple ones out here that I tried were. Like TOO sweet... offensively sweet, with just a faint tinge of tart, and an odd mustiness. Idunno. Maybe I need to drink a little more to improve my vocabular descriptosity or something.

[ - ] taoV 4 points 3.7 yearsAug 26, 2021 23:45:45 ago (+4/-0)

Based and cactuspilled.

[ - ] lord_nougat 3 points 3.7 yearsAug 26, 2021 23:46:18 ago (+3/-0)

A truly hard pill to swallow.

[ - ] spasswerk 4 points 3.7 yearsAug 26, 2021 23:39:46 ago (+4/-0)

The part about burning off the spines is important. They will get into your lips and tongue like fine steel wool. Had a friend rush the roasting and suffered for a couple of days.

[ - ] Fascinus 2 points 3.7 yearsAug 27, 2021 00:30:10 ago (+2/-0)

Can confirm. Harvested a bunch of pears off of beaver tail cactus, a little cousin that grows in the high desert.

Brought them home and burned the spines off. Evidently, I didn't know what I was doing because I spent the next hour or so pulling tiny little spines out of my tongue and palate.

Good times :)

Hadn't heard that about the seeds and I believe it.

Fruit is good for diverticulitis and the beetus.

You could just grab them with a pair of tongs. There's a few with different gripping areas, find the best that works for you. Bonus is that they will also work for burning off the spikes.
