The population of the US is something like 300 million. 50% have been vaccinated, so that is 150 million unvaccinated. 50 million shots left over, meaning that only 100 million more shots needed. They order 200 million more. That's 100 million more than necessary. But who's counting?

First off, shit for brains, the pfizer vax is administered in two doses. Second, imagine the logistics of ordering only exactly as much as you need if your stated goal is to have enough available to vaccinate everybody on demand. It doesn’t take a lot of life experience to recognize why this would be wasteful. It’s akin to an office only buying printer paper one sheet at a time.
