For those trying to lose weight: diet is 95% of the battle.

submitted by Hey_guys_whats_up to PimsGym 2.8 yearsJul 9, 2021 11:07:59 ago (+49/-1)     (PimsGym)

Back when I was sitting at around 235 I dropped my weight down to 201 over about 6 months and I did it entirely with diet changes alone. No excersize no weight lifting or running or nothing, just changed what I was eating. If you are fat, no amount of jogging is going to help, no amount of pushups or pilates will change anything, you can run for 5 hours a day and do 300 reps on the weights and you aren't going to lose shit until you STOP EATING THE FUCKING PIZZA ALREADY.

Diet is 95% of the battle when it comes to losing weight, working out is almost incidental. Remember you're body is designed to hold onto that fat and not let go, it purposely burns as slow as possible, it's easier to just not eat it than to burn it off. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of fat.

The best way to diet is too count calories. This let's you aim between not losing and feeling like you're starving causing you to give up. The easiest way to count is too use an app like "Lose it!" or "My fitness pal". You also want a food scale.

Everyone wants to lose weight but no one talks about gaining it... in muscle! Why not? Greater muscle mass is the only way to manipulate your metabolism. If you build muscle your diet will need to change to adapt, even a healthy diet. It all depends on your starting point/end points, just saying eat a salad, eat less carbs or get on a treadmill shows ignorance.

I've lost weight without changing my diet, by building up my muscles. Of course I don't really eat crappy (fast food/sugar) to begin with but I don't eat perfectly "clean" either. Did I eat bread, yes. Pizza, yeah. (not from pizza chains). Yeah you heard right, I ate pizza and lost weight, suck it. Did I eat in excess, no. I made sure to limit my carbs but I never had a set amount per day either. Just roughly guessed how much I could handle each day. My focus was on the exercises. Expect to actually gain weight if you start anaerobic exercises at first, then after about 2 months weight starts to fall. I encouraged a female I know to do something similar and it worked for her as well. If you want more details about it I can post but I think it's fairly common knowledge on anaerobics. Use whatever program you wish (p90x, bowflex, training manual of the Waffen SS, whatever) just as long as you get the right form and reps etc. The hardest part will be staying with it till you meet your goal.

As far as eating pizza, that doesn't matter. What matters is what's in it vs what can you handle. Obviously Pizza chain joints have carbs in terms of bread/cheese, but also sugar, and soybean oil. It's all bottom of the barrel in terms of ingredients, even papa johns. Better ingredients my fat ass. Make your own imo, but also don't over eat it. I can't tell you what amount because everyone is at different fitness levels. Don't bother with the cauliflower pizza crap, if you can't eat pizza because of a diet, eat something else imo.

tldr;
Anaerobic > diet > aerobic. use all 3.

Have to agree .. last June 2020 I saw myself in a full length mirror dressed only in underpants I could not believe how fat I was, when I got on the scales at home I was 103 kg which is 16.22 stone or 227.1 pounds, which for my height of 182 cm or about 5'11" classified me as "Obese" in the body size / weight chart.

I had been living on Ramen Noodles for a couple years and when I went into the supermarket I always hit the tray with the reduced priced donuts, apple turnovers & cream more especially, Belgian Chocolate Cake @ 3$ would you believe, iced coffee, strawberry yogurt ..

Ok so the whole lot stopped, now a little over one year on when I got on the scales two days ago I was 89.6 kg which is 14.1 stone or 198 pounds, whereas according to the chart I am still "Overweight," and still need to get down to about 82 kg to get into the "Healthy Weight" category.

I feel ok I ride a bike all over the place at 71 yrs, I get other exercise and still do a little aerobics and light weight training .. that's my story anyway, good luck :)

What ever op says throw it out the window... the Olympic swimmer was eating 12k calories of food a day and never put on one pound of weight.

Work out and eat what you want. If you don't lose weight run more or do more cardio learn to box practice mma go on long hikes!

Become a chad don't become a bitch who watches what they eat<<< I eat healthy but I also eat what I want.

6'2" 185 pounds 46... college playing weight 185 to 190 pounds

Changing your diet can be hard.

I would recommend adding in good food into a shit diet. For example if you eat too much pizza, make some burgers and eat a burger before the pizza. Then add lots of meat to the pizza, add tons of steak or burger to the pizza, atc.

You can only eat so much meat and beef will give satiety with the fat and protein composition.

You will then get away from pizza, and now you cannot live without steak. You'll realize pizza doesn't satisfy you and steak does. When you are at that point add vegetables to your burger or steak.

Eventually your body will be tuned to eating healthy.

I lost 30 lbs when I took up jogging/running/walking. What I found is my appetite seemed to naturally change. Like my body knew what was coming (more running) and my cravings and what sounded good to eat changed to accomodate the nutritional needs of my body. I'm no rocket surgeon but I think the body is pretty smart about this stuff beneath the conscious level. It'll optimize for what you do. If what you do is sit on the couch it's probably directing you to pack on the pounds expecting hibernation or god knows what. If you're out running every day it directs you to eat things to support that activity.

Basically, just stop eating stuff with added sugar.

Simple pithy "rules" I've found effective:
Diet makes you thin, exercise makes you fit (that's a lot clearer than "diet & exercise")
Lift enough to damage your muscles (failure), sleep enough for them to repair (it only happens while sleeping)
When super sore the next day, do some more no matter how sore for quicker recovery (you have to burn off the lactic acid buildup)

[ - ] voatisajewishheaven 1 point 2.8 yearsJul 9, 2021 20:05:06 ago (+1/-0)

I think at the core of the "diet and exercise" advice is the fact that healthy muscles burn calories better, and better calories burn better, kinda.

[ - ] Kozel 0 points 2.8 yearsJul 9, 2021 16:27:44 ago (+0/-0)

You can lose about 2LB of fat per day by just not eating. I did it for 5 days after coming back rounder than I like from a vacation.

[ - ] HughBriss 1 point 2.8 yearsJul 9, 2021 15:42:18 ago (+1/-0)

Very true. People try to blame their inability to lose weight because they have a "slow metabolism", but that's nonsense. There's not a lot of variability in metabolism from person to person, although faster metabolism is a function of activity, which means the more active you are, the (slightly) faster your metabolism can be.

Nevertheless, one doesn't need exercise to lose weight. It helps, but not as much as people think. But it's still a good idea.

Thanks for this post. Can you please specify what exactly you ate and what time and how much? And I don't mean "don't eat foods with this or that". I would like to know exact brand names or food names if you don't want to say the brands that worked.

Like:

Breakfast: Eggs and bacon
Lunch: BLT
Supper: Shark Steak

Snacks: Something...

PLEASE and thank you!

I did this too. Technique is credited.

No workouts. Computer programming only. Just a slim jim and a diet coke everyday for dinner. Looked old and frail. Face looked ghastly. Got more grey hair. Got a six pack and shoulders. Had some nice selfies but unfortunately needed to focus on abdomen cause my face looked 20 years older. ORM bench dropped from 255lbs to about 135lbs, which is all I dared try. Weight dropped from 185 lbs to 155 lbs. I fucked, but barely.

[ - ] Goatboy 1 point 2.8 yearsJul 9, 2021 13:43:24 ago (+1/-0)*

OP is retarded.

If you eat 2,000 calories per day, you must burn 2,001 calories per day to lose weight. At that rate it would take 3,500 days to lose 1 pound of fat.

On the other hand, if you eat 1500 calories per day and burn 2000 calories per day, it would take you 7 days to lose 1 pound of fat.

If you eat 2000 calories per day, you must burn 2500 calories per day to lose 1 pound of fat in 1 week.

If you repeat that every week, then you will lose 52 pounds per year.

Understand, that your new (body fat)/(all other body organ systems) composition ratio is different whenever you alter your body's fat. This changes the basal metabolic rate or how much your body will fight and try to return to your original set point, until the set point that your new BMR equals your new body composition set point.

Forget everything you've ever been told by anyone with a financial or repuational interest in some specific diet plan or excersise market. They're all both right and simultaneously full of shit. That includes the USDA, by the way. Forget it all. You're an omnivore. It doesn't matter what you eat, you just need to eat less of it and burn more of it off.

Going forward your diet is: eat less, excersise more, sleep alot, and stick to it.

Do you think one type of food matters more than some other? WRONG! Check out the guys who eat prison and prison commissary food. They eat shit, get jacked by eating less, excersising more, sleeping alot, and sticking to it. They have no other option. However, some types of food make sticking to eating less easier than other foods by maintaining low blood glucose levels and promoting long term satiety and ketogenesis, i.e. Low Carb, High Fat foods.

Do you think one type of excersise matters more than some other? WRONG, unless your goal is to optimize some specific body system more than some other body system, i.e. triathalon/high cardio training vs weight lifting competitions vs fighting competitions etc.

If you want to lose weight keto is the best method, Fats keep you fuller longer and you burn an extra 200 calories a day due to ketosis burning more energy.

[ - ] recon_johnny 0 points 2.8 yearsJul 9, 2021 13:04:04 ago (+0/-0)

The old saying is that you cannot outrun a bad diet.

Even the specifics....sugar, carbs in general, etc...are important, but calories is the issue.

If your baseline is 2500 cals/day and you eat 2000, you will lose weight. Period.

[ - ] SilentByAssociation 0 points 2.8 yearsJul 9, 2021 14:17:13 ago (+0/-0)

Healthy feels better than fat tastes.

[ - ] UndercoverGoyim 0 points 2.8 yearsJul 9, 2021 12:36:15 ago (+0/-0)

Diet is a huge part of the equation (especially if you are fat) but exercise is definitely just as important. No matter your weight, if you're trying to lose weight, you need to both reduce your calorie intake (eat less and less shit food) in addition to burning a lot of the calories that you did take in through good quality cardio (bike and/or swimming and NOT at a relaxed rate).

[ - ] happytoes 0 points 2.8 yearsJul 9, 2021 14:35:46 ago (+0/-0)

The issue is: what is being held constant? If you want to burn a 100kcal through exercise, that is hours of hard work. But eating a 1000kcal is just a pleasant five minutes of indulgence. At constant time-and-effort diet is hugely more important than exercise for weight loss.

you can run for 5 hours a day and do 300 reps on the weights and you aren't going to lose shit until you STOP EATING THE FUCKING PIZZA ALREADY.

isn't exactly correct. I don't even like that kind of rhetoric; absolute language claiming something that is not strictly true, is off putting. And yet it is so close to correct!

[ - ] TFS 1 point 2.8 yearsJul 9, 2021 12:33:06 ago (+1/-0)*

The Ketogenic diet in combination with daily exercise will do the trick. It's the best way to eat whether you're trying to loose weight, combat food allergies, sleep better and feeling more stable overall and getting rid of those carbohydrate induced mood swings.

Add intermittent fasting to that and you'll be stronger, slimmer and healthier and happier within a couple weeks.

[ - ] voatisajewishheaven 3 points 2.8 yearsJul 9, 2021 12:32:28 ago (+3/-0)

So are you against exercising? Or just against exercising being promoted as the sole solution? Usually what is being promoted for weight loss is "diet AND exercise".

I'm glad you succeeded and attained a reasonable weight but I don't think you can get to 235 of fat without at least some sedentary habits that you're better off without anyway.

If you are fat, no amount of jogging is going to help

No doubt that it may feel like that to you, but you're not breaking the laws of thermodynamics in this realm. Energy in, energy out.

it's easier to just not eat it than to burn it off.

Interesting take, might be true for you ;) It depends on how easily can your hunger hormones overcome your willpower. "Burning it off" might trigger some insane hunger that overrides everything for you so it cancels out, might be different for someone else.

[ - ] Hey_guys_whats_up [op] 4 points 2.8 yearsJul 9, 2021 13:13:07 ago (+4/-0)*

I've personally met and seen a lot of people who believe if they start going for a morning run or if they start going to the gym that they will begin to lose weight, but make very little to no changes to their diet, leading to them losing no weight and believing that exercising is a waste.

Excersize is absolutely essential to general health and toning your body, I promote it. It's just that people need to realize that working it is for maintenance and extreme workouts are needed for serious muscle building.

It's also very encouraging for a lot of people to realize that they don't need to work out every single day or sacrifice time or schedule. With eating less, you simply do what you already do but with less of it or different food. Obviously this will depend on each person as someone with an extreme eating addiction may find excersize easier to engage in than eating less, but the former is still pointless without the latter. People should do both but if someone is overweight then they already show a lack of self control and thusly will likely respond better to simpler option.

In my personal experience, the #1 point when it comes to weight loss and just general health improvements is: NO SUGAR!! I don't think there is any benefit to sugar, especially added sugar. For fruits you should stick to berries. Sugar is just empty calories that can potentially turn you into an addict. Lord knows I've suffered due to my sweet tooth.

#2 would be low quality food, especially those that are carb and crappy oil heavy. So no more fast food. Just prepare easy and clean meals. There are tons of recipes online to help you get started. Now if you must be lazy I suggest buying food from places you know that have decent quality ingredients and aren't unhealthy. To save money, buy a large plate or whatever if available, then split it over 2 meals. Also important to note: you should only eat until you aren't hungry, not eat until you're full. If you get hungry in between meals have some snacks ready such as baby carrots and chopped cucumbers.

I also recommend working out regularly. This'll accelerate your weight loss and also ensure you don't end up a skinny weakling at the end of it. If you're out of shape and haven't worked out in a long time (or ever) buy yourself some equipment and start one of those programs that have instructional videos, like p90. It'll potentially be painful but it'll also be easy as all you have to do is follow the videos and adjust the intensity of your workout according to your physical limits. Follow these steps and you'll see pretty significant improvements in a few months. Once you've gotten comfortable with a workout routine I suggest going to a gym (or set up a gym at home if you have the space and money) to further strengthen yourself.

Tl;dr - NO SUGAR, no more junk food, don't overeat, exercise to speed up fat burning and for getting stronger.

[ - ] ScheduledSuicide 8 points 2.8 yearsJul 9, 2021 12:11:45 ago (+8/-0)

Corn syrup, corn solids, corn slurry, high fructose corn syrup, corn additives, fructose, fruit sugars, etc. Lots of different names for it.

I knew there was a lot of them but damn, turns out there's over 50 and counting: https://www.virtahealth.com/blog/names-for-sugar

fructose and lactose in their natural habitat I'm totally okay with tho, also difficult to avoid without cutting milk and fruit (which there's no valid reason to).

[ - ] PotatoWhisperer 8 points 2.8 yearsJul 9, 2021 12:13:29 ago (+8/-0)

Some added advice:

If you get hungry in between meals

Healthy fats = satiation. Obviously keep it within your calorie goals. Meat itself helps too. A healthy diet with fatty meats and vegetables combined with regular exercise and sleep will go a loooong way to keeping not-hungry.

I also recommend working out regularly.

Don't go too hard right off the bat. You will be discouraged if you go at it too hard and end up hurting yourself. Listen to your body, adjust as needed. If you have to start with a 1min run and 10 pushups, so be it. Accept it and do it daily. After a few days, when that isn't killing you, then you can up the numbers.

But remember to listen to your body. It will tell you if you have gotten enough sleep, enough vegetables, fat, protein, or are pushing yourself too hard.

AND DRINK YOUR DAMNED WATER!!!

Water will help with recovery, tiredness, sleep, hunger, etc.

[ - ] oyy_veyy_goyy 3 points 2.8 yearsJul 9, 2021 12:40:41 ago (+3/-0)

I did mention to adjust the intensity of workouts based on physical limits. I should've elaborated and said that physical limits include signs of joint pain, feelings of almost pulling something, feeling dizzy, nauseous, etc.

And you're absolutely right about water. Water is THE drink. Sometimes it'll even help reduce feelings of hunger as that actually might be your body telling you you're dehydrated. Cut out sodas (even diet and sugar free) and fruit juices (even 100% natural ones). Unsweetened tea and coffee is ok so long as you don't drink too much and don't drink caffeinated ones after noon has passed.

I also forgot to mention sleep. A full night's sleep is important for recovery and for not lacking energy the next day. Best to sleep at a consistent time and not look at a screen half an hour or so before going to bed.

[ - ] PotatoWhisperer 4 points 2.8 yearsJul 9, 2021 12:49:22 ago (+4/-0)

The #1 fitness rule I go by: don't drink your calories.

Processed sugars are the worst thing you could add to any diet.

As is often repeated: abs are made in the kitchen.

[ - ] MartinTimothy 2 points 2.8 yearsJul 9, 2021 22:07:40 ago (+2/-0)

Can I add ..

"Fat doesn't make you fat, sugar and carbohydrates make you fat," according to Dr Bruce Hedendal of Boca Raton, Florida who was at the forefront of chiropractic and functional medicine throughout his entire career, whose death at age 67 yrs in 2015 is one of many highly suspicious deaths of Holistic practitioners in the US.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1cmo-q6nPBKe08_sWLie8i-XhSmWxTFDi-HiN2m2rnoU/edit#gid=178385142

I went and saw Bruce Hedendal at the Park Road Holistic Center in Brisbane, Australia in 2001, I was into body building and had a problem re despite working out every day and remaining on a strict diet, there was a stubborn band of midriff tissue [fat] that would not go away.

He told me the midriff issue was caused by fructose from the high glycemic index fruit I had been consuming, he did a saliva analysis and formulated a diet based on my blood group .. I took his advice and the problem went away, he was down hard on dairy products at least for men.

Working out, as in aerobic or running, will keep your metabolism nice and healthy but you're right, running all day won't burn off a large pizza or pasta.
