Hackers Claim To Have Compromised Data Broker Used By U.S. Government To Dodge Warrants     (www.techdirt.com)

Gravy Analytics, the parent company of Venntel, is like many dodgy data brokers. The company gleans vast troves of sensitive U.S. behavior and location cellphone data, then generally sells access to that data to a long line of folks. Including the U.S. government, which has increasingly turned to buying data broker data as a quick and easy end around for having to get a warrant.

Consumers Cut Streaming Services In 2024 After Endless Price Hikes And Enshittification     (www.techdirt.com)

https://www.techdirt.com/2025/01/08/consumers-pay-less-for-streaming-in-2024-after-endless-price-hikes-and-enshittification/

Now that streaming subscriber growth has slowed, we’ve noted repeatedly how the streaming TV sector is falling into all of the bad habits that ultimately doomed traditional cable TV.

That has involved chasing pointless “growth of growth’s sake” megamergers and imposing bottomless price hikes and new annoying restrictions — all while simultaneously cutting corners on product quality in a bid to give Wall Street that sweet, impossible, unlimited, quarterly growth it demands.

Customers are reacting. According to Review’s annual State of Consumer Media Spending Report, the average American spent 23 percent less on streaming subscriptions in 2024 than in 2023. Not because streaming was cheaper, but because customers are being more particular about which streaming service they subscribe to in a bid to do something about soaring costs

“A total 27.8% of Americans report experiencing “streaming fatigue,” defined as that exact feeling of being overwhelmed with the increasing number of streaming apps.”

Russia aims for 11.2 nm EUV using Xenon lasers, instead of ASML's approach of zapping tin droplets     (www-cnews-ru.translate.goog)

After watching a YouTube video with only one fact (11.2 nanometers) I searched the web and worked my way back along the chain of Chinese Whispers to reach a Russian source. Using Google translate, this does seem to be genuinely interesting, albeit on a ten year time scale.

In the short term Russia might be managing home grown photo lithography at 350 nm next year, and the article says "The new laser will "pump up" it to 130 nm." Does that mean frequency doubling to get 130 nm light from 260 nm light? Or frequency tripling to get 130 nm light from 390 nm light? I'm still reading journalism, even if it is Russian :-(

There is some veneer of plebbit, but it's not bad overall.

Crypto regulation in Yuropistan     (technology)

Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA), in short is a whole slew of permits (€€€) and regulations which makes is nearly impossible to purchase anything with bitcoin (or crypto in general).
Organisations facilitation crypto services need to collect all kinds of information of users and transaction streams ((against terrorism)) of course.

The regulation sees to 'governance, capital regulation en administration'. So shops don't necessary need to comply, but any company facilitating that will, killing crypto as payment for common people (as I see it).

FTC launches probe of Microsoft over bundling     (arstechnica.com)

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2024/12/ftc-launches-probe-of-microsoft-over-bundling/

The Federal Trade Commission is investigating Microsoft in a wide-ranging probe that will examine whether the company’s business practices have run afoul of antitrust laws, according to people familiar with the matter. In recent weeks, FTC attorneys have been conducting interviews and setting up meetings with Microsoft competitors.

One key area of interest is how the world’s largest software provider packages popular Office products together with cybersecurity and cloud computing services, said one of the people, who asked not to be named discussing a confidential matter.

This so-called bundling was the subject of a recent ProPublica investigation, which detailed how, beginning in 2021, Microsoft used the practice to vastly expand its business with the US government while boxing competitors out of lucrative federal contracts.

My new Technics EAH-A800E-K look amazing     (technology)
submitted by Conspirologist to technology 4 months ago (+2/-5)
7 comments last comment...
Today I've got brand new Technics EAH-A800E-K and I feel happy. For discount $200 price they are amazing, the same as Sony or Bose quality that cost more.

Bluetooth 5.2 is amazing. It's lightning fast. They work even outside my house. Never happened with lower versions.

Sound is perfect. Not many preset choices, but all I need is the Dynamic preset with clear sound and balanced bass.

Wearing comfort is perfect. They are very light and fit perfectly my head and my ears (I've got a standard head).

Both ANC and Ambient modes work good.

Power button is beyond standard. It even says the charge level automatically when the headphones are switched off.

The design is perfect. It's between light high-tech and classic. Very balanced design that is not exaggerated or annoying.

The only not perfect part is the control buttons. They are too small and fragile. The only part that feels cheap.

P.S. Please, if you know some problems I should be aware, please let me know as soon as possible. Thanks in advance.

$2 per megabyte: AT&T mistakenly charged customer $6,223 for 3.1GB of data     (arstechnica.com)

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2024/12/2-per-megabyte-att-mistakenly-charged-customer-6223-for-3-1gb-of-data/

An AT&T customer who switched to the company's FirstNet service for first responders got quite the shock when his >bill came in at $6,223.60, instead of the roughly $260 that his four-line plan previously cost each month.

The Texas man described his experience in a now-deleted Reddit post three days ago, saying he hadn't been able to >get the obviously incorrect bill reversed despite calling AT&T and going to an AT&T store in Dallas. The case drew >plenty of attention and the bill was finally wiped out several days after the customer contacted the AT&T president's office.

The customer said he received the billing email on December 11. An automatic payment was scheduled for December 15, >but he canceled the autopay before the money was charged. The whole mess took a week to straighten out.

comcast is the proverbial devil but i refuse to switch to att even if the prices are lower and they have true fiber.

i have had nothing but bad experiences with ATT in the past

Apparently, Grok AI is smarter than Gab AI     (technology)

Both Grok AI and Gab AI are free for a limited time during the day. You have to wait between sessions. If you want to use them for 24/7, you have to buy a paid subscription.

Anyway, Grok AI looks smarter and smoother than Gab AI. I really enjoy talking with Grok Ai, while Gab AI pisses me off very often because of it's stupidity and often incorrect information. Also, Grok AI has more sources for info.

The only problem with Grok AI, is that because of a bug, it often denies connection, asking to disable all security extensions on my browser. When it's site works well, it's a pleasure to talk with it and ask any questions possible.

TL/DR: Grok AI is smart, but has a bug that often denies connection. Gab AI is stupid, gives often wrong information, but always allows connection.
