A winning wager — every time.

As the globalist Marxist forces, currently gathered in Davos for the World Economic Forum, continue to point to their lust for power, it's clear as a bell they are betting on people being stupid. They aren't taking over the world with guns and bullets and bombs and wars. They are seizing control of minds.

And any sane analysis shows how it's done: through co-opting education and media. The perversion of education, especially higher-level institutions, has proven very successful. Irreligious and unpatriotic forces slowly invaded America's education system until the scales had tipped, and they became the dominant force.

As far back as the mid- to late-1970s, the idiocy pouring out of American colleges and universities was labeled "political correctness" (PC). PC was the advance team for "wokeness." What began on the blackboards, faculty lounges and classrooms of the ivory tower gang soon spilled into the streets and corporate boardrooms all over the country. It truly was the poisoning of the American mind, first becoming visible on college campuses.

In his massively successful bestseller The Closing of the American Mind, professor Allan Bloom laid out his case about the toxic atmosphere seizing control of academia and its consequences. The subtitle to his classic says it all: "How higher education has failed democracy and impoverished the souls of today's students." Poisoning the intellect of a culture is not an overnight endeavor; it is, in fact, a multigenerational assault.

It's an all-out blitz on everything previous generations held as sacred. So a tidy recipe has to be concocted that both destroys what went before and replaces what went before with something new. Enter the media.

They are rock solid.

Last month, during a commercial break for CBS' 60 Minutes weekly Sunday program, Ronald Reagan Jr. (yes, son of former President Ronald Reagan) was featured in an ad promoting atheism and mocking religion, specifically Christianity and the teaching about Hell.

Aside from some rather obvious points, like, for example, that the Freedom From Religion Foundation (whom the commercial was for) must be rolling in the bucks, an ad on 60 Minutes costs millions. The ad was controversial enough that some local stations refused to air it — but most did.

But laying all the "earthly" stuff aside, let's jump to the theological and philosophical. Atheism must define itself in the negative — as in, "We believe in not God." Well, then, what precisely, in a positive sense, do you believe? "Not God" has to be the answer.

Those among them who do not quite understand that their entire approach is based on a negative might endeavor to play word games and attempt to make what sound like positive assertions — but in the end, they really aren't.

Talk about weird!

Open borders. Closed borders. It truly is a grab bag when it comes to the question of immigration — legal and especially illegal. Let's begin with China, which recently announced that it's become much more "family friendly." Since the death of Mao Zedong in 1976, China became extremely violent toward the idea of children, instituting its savage one-child policy along with forced abortion as the enforcement mechanism.

Sidebar — Joe Biden, the "devout Catholic," never had a problem with that and was instrumental in gaining the Chinese the much-coveted "most-favored-nation trade status" during his time in the U.S. Senate.

Over the ensuing decades, the Chinese communists relented somewhat, occasionally rolling back some aspects of the one-child, forced-abortion policy. But as the decades wore on, the commies in charge realized that killing your future generations didn't make for good long-term prosperity.

So this year, in a complete about-face, the child-killing commies in Beijing are now encouraging couples to have babies and are even talking about expanding child health care. Who'd have thought even a few years ago that commies in China would understand how bad abortion is before American political leaders?

The whole murderous mindset began back in the mid- to late-'70s as the myth of overpopulation was becoming entrenched around the world. The Chinese communist solution to poverty was simply to kill the poor, much like American foreign policy has been since Obama and now on steroids under Biden.

But when the economic toll of killing off your future generations begins to be realized — well, emergency overdrive measures are deployed. All of a sudden, in countries around the world, governments are pro-child in an effort to increase their populations — imagine that.

...

Let's start with the second one first. Catholics number about 62 million in the United States, according to the bishops, which translates to about one in five Americans. That roughly 21% number means it's the largest single religion in the country.

But if you suck out roughly seven million from that total because they are not actual citizens, the overall percentage drops to just 16%. The conclusion of the math here is very easy. Illegal immigration is keeping the bishops' numbers artificially high. The real percentage is something much lower than the statistics being published.

What if death was the only thing guaranteed?

When the last Congress — controlled by Democrats — passed into law funding for 87,000 new IRS agents, it set off a firestorm of protests and political firebombs. It became a major talking point on the 2022 midterm campaign trail and helped propel the Grand Old Party to take control of the U.S. House.

Correspondingly, it became the very first piece of legislation passed by the GOP-controlled House last week. After his grueling battle to become speaker, Kevin McCarthy gleefully tweeted out: "House Republicans just voted unanimously to repeal the Democrats' army of 87,000 IRS agents. This was our very first act of the new Congress, because government should work for you, not against you."

The bill is dead on arrival in the Democrat-controlled Senate, and even if by some political miracle it passed there, Biden would never sign it. You have to control both the House of Congress and the White House to effectively get anything done — but it plays well on Main Street.

In fact, sitting safely behind the barricade of "we are in the minority in Washington," some Republicans have even gone on record saying, "Forget the 87,000 agents; just abolish the IRS completely." And in the immediate aftermath of securing enough votes to pass the "anti-87,000 new agents" bill, the stalwart Republican Freedom Caucus members introduced a bill to not just dump the new agents and not just the IRS itself — but the entire system of federal income tax.

Additionally, the bill gets rid of the death, gift and payroll taxes, and it would replace the current tax code with a national consumption tax, meaning you only pay federal tax when you actually purchase something. So sales taxes would go up, perhaps dramatically, but you would keep almost every penny you make. There would be virtually no need any longer to distinguish between gross pay and net (take-home) pay. You earned it, you keep it.

Without getting into the particulars of how that would work, what it would mean for the federal budget, the effects on the economy and all that (and "all that" is quite a lot), let's look at the notion of taxing income (the fruits of your labor) as a moral concept.

There has always been a stench of immorality around taxing the fruits of your labor. And given the massively Byzantine tax code the United States has, it also seems unfair, meaning unjust — an offense against the virtue of justice — that the very wealthy, including politicians, are able to skirt around much of this.

There is only one weapon.

It is just a real-world truism that team evil simply has more weapons at their disposal than the good guys. There's just no getting around that. They'll lie, cheat, steal, kill and resort to anything that works in their favor. Their mission is to demolish what is good and holy so as to build up the kingdom of their father, the Devil.

Not for nothing do we have the expression, "Good guys finish last." But beyond tactics, they also have a built-in advantage: the will and skill to actually use their weapons to their advantage. Referring to the dishonest steward in Luke's gospel, Our Blessed Lord touches on this very point, saying, "The children of this world are wiser in their generation than the children of light." (Luke 16:8)

Team evil and the children of light both recognize that they have a mission to build up and establish their respective kingdoms, each one for their respective father. Followers of Christ pray for this multiple times a day: "Thy kingdom come." But where it seems these two camps diverge is in the understanding and willingness to engage in the necessary step before construction — and that is demolition.

Neither Catholic Christians nor team evil are moving about in the world in a vacuum. Each side has built up something of its own kingdom — not completed, of course, but nonetheless in various stages of completion. Team evil long ago, however, understood that in the construction of the Kingdom of Hell, the Kingdom of Heaven would have to be demolished. That concept is almost completely lost on the children of light. Demolition is necessary. The path must be cleared for construction to begin.

The Early Church understood this and, over the first few centuries, demolished the Roman Empire. Once demolished, Catholic Western civilization could emerge, and construction began in great earnest. Among the greatest architectural feats in human history bear witness to this, as enormous cathedrals built to the glory of God and the establishment of the kingdom rose up all over the Catholic world, bearing testimony, in a material sense, to the underlying spiritual reality which gave birth to them.

A pagan kingdom had been demolished to make way for the construction of the Kingdom of Heaven. What seems to be lacking today — indeed, for the last (roughly) six to seven centuries in the Church (with rare exceptions) — is any real grasp of this dynamic: You must demolish in order to build.

Brought to you by traitors.

The current crisis humanity finds itself in is so multifaceted that normal people can feel overwhelmed just trying to know all the necessary information — much less trying to process it. That's why the Church Militant team does so much of the hunting and gathering and processing for you.

We don't know everything, obviously, but we certainly know a lot more than most. And we are able to process it all because we screen all of this through the necessary filter of spiritual war.

There's a certain philosophy a person has to use when looking at the world. Either everything that happens over very long periods of time is purely happenstance or coincidence, or there is an intelligence behind it all directing various things and ensuring work begun in one generation carries over not just to the next — but to the next 10.

Yep. Believe it.

In its continuing effort to supposedly save the planet and people's lives, the Party of Death now has its eyes trained squarely on the gas stoves in Americans' homes.

It was such an over-the-top claim that the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission immediately had to backpedal and issue a follow-up statement — eerily reminiscent of Obama telling the country to calm down about Obamacare — saying that if you like your gas stove, you can keep your gas stove.

About one-third of the 40 million U.S. homes use gas stoves, and in an effort to get rid of them, Democrats built massive tax credits into their so-called Inflation Reduction Act last year. Switch to electric, and they'll give you $840 of other people's money to do so!

The apparent "reasoning" is that a medical study was released saying gas stoves pose a health threat, especially to children. By that reasoning, the Marxists should ban abortion. They claim that the major threat is nitrogen dioxide poisoning the environment, right along with all that carbon, and people need to be protected.

...

A dozen years ago, Church Militant produced an in-depth look at all this in one of our Faith-Based Investigations entitled Global Warming Unmasked. We highly suggest you view it if you haven't. Just click on the provided link. We put hundreds of man-hours of research into this production, so it is extensive.

One thing we've noticed when we go back here and look at our earlier productions is just how relevant they are today — even more so, in fact.

The overpopulation ruse.

The diabolical hates humanity. We begin with that premise, that truth. There's a lot of theology in that statement, and if you'd like to delve more into that, we highly recommend watching the first episode of the very first program we ever produced here all the way back in 2006: The One True Faith: St. Michael and the Angels. It's available to premium members. Just click on the provided link to sign up.

Now, you need to understand the great spiritual battle playing in the background in order to understand the specific policies and legislation being pursued on the surface. The driving force behind the narrative is the claim that there are too many people on earth. We touched on this yesterday.

"Overpopulation" has been a major talking point of the Left for decades. It's also a driving force — although spoken of in more quiet terms — in the social justice corridors of the Church.

Its why they just sort of look the other way when it comes to "managing" U.S. government money — hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars — while partnering with pro-contraception, and, in some cases, pro-abortion NGOs in Third World nations, as well as here even at home.

...

In a recent sit-down interview with his Marxist media allies, Ehrlich was allowed to just lie through his teeth, unchallenged on CBS News' 60 Minutes. But Ehrlich has been on his anti-humanity, too many people rant going back decades. Every major gloom-and-doom prediction he has made has proven untrue. Yet because he was among the first to promote the anti-people narrative, he has found exalted status.

Satan himself couldn't have said that any better: "Children suck. Enjoy your leisure. Don't reproduce. If you have to, keep it to one. Socially shame those who actually have children." You get the idea: "From even before conception, life is to be battled against. If you do, by chance, become pregnant, consider killing the child. If the child is born, get fixed so you don't conceive anymore. The planet can't handle it!"

What's disturbing about all this is that the hierarchy has brought into all of it. They routinely speak in terms of man-made climate change being a real thing. There are multiple programs they support and push with your money to keep "climate change" in front of you. It's impossible for the people of God to be insufficiently scared and nerve-racked, don't you know?

Looks more like constant retreat.

A few years back, I was visiting with a noted archbishop in his office about the dire state of the Church and, consequently, the world. I asked him if he and other bishops of his mind huddled up regularly, called each other, got together, formed organizations with each other, sat on each other's boards of directors and so forth. He looked at me somewhat puzzled, and I said, "Well, your enemies in the episcopate do that!"

He answered me back and said, "Well, no. We don't. Conservatives tend to conserve." And that right there is a perfect sum up of everything wrong in the Church (as well as the world) when it comes to the so-called "good guys."

"Conservatives" — whatever that empty term has now come to mean — are delusional. They fail to either understand or admit that their enemies play for keeps and want us dead. There seems to be this "Marquess of Queensberry Rules" approach to the political and mostly spiritual battle raging around us, like politeness should rule the day. But what is spoken of as politeness and "charity" is really just a mask covering cowardice. It's an unwillingness to go to war and not do what needs to be done.

The world is binary.

For all those crazies out there preaching and thinking that everyone goes to heaven, they're sort of right — at least with the underlying assumption in their poor reasoning that it's a simple process. It is. It really is simple: If you die in a state of sanctifying grace, you're there. Likely Purgatory beforehand, but you're still saved. And that's not to discount the sufferings of Purgatory, but this Vortex is about salvation, not the purgations we'll likely experience.

So if all that's required is to die in a state of sanctifying grace, then sign me up, right? Well, sure. But this is where the rubber hits the road. It's unfathomable that the vast majority of humanity actually does die in a state of grace. The logic then follows that the vast majority of humanity is damned, no matter what Bp. Barron says — or smokes.

A state of sanctifying grace means that you are in a condition of holiness to the degree that the Holy Trinity resides in you. The opposite of this is being in a condition of serious sin, mortal sin, where the Holy Trinity cannot abide in you because God cannot dwell where there is sin.

So the examination and analysis that has to be objectively engaged in is this: Am I in a state of grace or a state of mortal sin right now? In short, the logic continues, if I were to die at this instant, would I be damned or saved? That question is the answer to the much-ballyhooed question, "What is the meaning of life?" The meaning of life is to be saved — period.

That’s what's needed in the Church.

With the death and burial of Pope Benedict now in the past, whatever small modicum of decorum or standing on protocol that the crazies in the Vatican and throughout the larger Church may have exercised will surely be gone now.

The machinery of the Church has been overrun from within and turned into a propaganda outfit for the new world order run by the likes of Klaus Schwab of the World Economic Forum, Joe Biden, Justin Trudeau and many others.

In fact, the co-opting of the Church was a necessary step in all this for them because it "baptized" their efforts, putting a respectable face on super-control efforts like climate change, the destruction of borders, pandemics and so forth.

When Antonio Gramsci founded the Italian Communist Party a hundred years ago, he wrote that the biggest obstacle to world domination would be the Catholic Church.

The Church is not only universal (which is the definition of the Greek word from which we derive "Catholic") in its teachings and doctrines and theology, it's also just plain old normal universal; it's everywhere.

Now it begins.

A programming note: Church Militant will be airing a special presentation on Pope Benedict today at 5 p.m. EST. We invite you to please watch.

Pope Benedict has now been laid to rest, entombed in the grotto of crypts under St. Peter's. He's alongside the bodies of many previous popes, including, of course, St. Peter himself (the first pope), which is why St. Peter's Basilica bears his name.

It's a two-thousand-year connection, a straight line back to Peter. It was Christ Himself who gave Simon the keys to the kingdom after changing his name to Peter.

After raising Simon Bar-Jonah to great heights by announcing that He would be the holder of the keys, Peter lost privilege by betraying Our Blessed Lord. And Peter did betray Him, not just deny Him. His betrayal came in the form of denial, but it was a betrayal nonetheless. Not much different than Judas' betrayal, in fact.

From the moment at Caesarea Philippi when Our Lord designated Simon as Peter and future leader of the Apostles by virtue of the keys, he was known as Peter. However, after the Resurrection, Jesus called him Simon Bar-Jonah, reverting back to his pre-designation name.

It would have been an emotional blow to Peter, and he would likely have felt it keenly.

Do not let yourselves be confused.

A programming note for everyone: Tomorrow evening at 5 p.m. EST (after the funeral and burial at St. Peter's in Rome), Church Militant will be airing a special presentation called Remembering Benedict — a look back on his life and papacy and the many enigmas surrounding the man faithful Catholics called "God's Rottweiler," as a tip of the hat to his adherence to the faith.

Benedict was elected in 2005, and he wrote a last testament in 2006, a custom for those elected to the throne of St. Peter. The last part of that testament bears intense scrutiny for all men of goodwill because of what he says:

Stand firm in the faith! Do not let yourselves be confused! It often seems that science — the natural sciences on the one hand and historical research (especially exegesis of Sacred Scripture) on the other — is able to offer irrefutable results at odds with the Catholic faith. I have experienced the transformations of the natural sciences since long ago and have been able to see how, on the contrary, apparent certainties against the faith have vanished, proving to be not science, but philosophical interpretations only apparently pertaining to science.

Even though he would not die for 16 more years, he was writing those words in view of his death — literally taking a parting shot at the false gods of this world. He plainly understood that these false gods exist for one reason and one reason only: to upend and eradicate the Catholic faith.

In his last official words, he echoes the thoughts of Pope St. Pius X in his landmark encyclical Pascendi Domini Gregis, Latin for "feed my sheep," written almost 100 years earlier.

Both men had great insight into the attacks on Sacred Scripture posing as historical research or biblical exegesis.

One example is the analysis that Jesus didn't know who He was or understand His mission — both points strongly hinted at by Fr. James Martin as well as many other Judases present in the Church

The major stories of the year.

As the new year begins, the reality facing the Church is formidable in many ways — but we did not get here overnight. That said, it's important to know how we got here so we can better understand the challenges unfolding before us.

Many of you were extremely generous in our end-of-the-year donation request, and we'd like to show what your money helps produce. Late last week, we did a perspective piece: our 2022: Year in Review.

In many ways, it showcases what we do so well here at Church Militant: look at events and contextualize them in terms of the Faith.

Since we reviewed many stories from the entire year, the end result is necessarily comprehensive — but, again, it highlights what we do so well here at this apostolate.

The crew here busted hump to put all this together for you, and it is well worth the watch, despite its length. So please watch and enjoy the full-length Church Militant 2022: Year in Review.

Not as free as you might think.

First, allow us to continue offering our gratitude for those of you contributing to our end-of-the-year fundraiser. We know times are tough right now, thanks to the Marxist takeover of much of the country, but we too feel the bite of all that, so any contributions you make are most appreciated. If you have not yet donated and would still like to, please just click on the link below — and thank you in advance.

What we do here at Church Militant each and every day is simple: We report the truth. Why we do it is for the salvation of souls, but what we do is critical. Church Militant was the very first Catholic apostolate to pour massive resources into internet video on a daily basis. Others have since followed our lead. We've been doing this for almost 17 years now, blazing the trail — and it's a trail that, frankly, needed to be blazed.

The American public, including Catholics, has long ago become accustomed to watching its information and entertainment, not reading anywhere near as much. Like it or not, that's the reality. And now it has exploded to gigantic proportions with dozens and dozens of internet offerings. We were the leading edge of this back in the day and have been around longer than even secular outlets like Netflix and so forth.

While we produce all kinds of content — this Vortex, for example, Headlines, Evening News, blockbuster investigations — it has all taken on the unmistakable quality of a new era in the life of the Catholic laity. Think about this: Up until only very recently, the idea of a Catholic press was a myth, at least as we all understand the press.

Church Militant 2.0.

Our thanks to all of you, once again, for your continuing support and generosity for the work we do here each and every day, as we turn the page on 2022 and look ahead to 2023. If you'd like to contribute to our end-of-2022 fundraiser, please just click on the provided link below — and thank you in advance.

We are very aware of the sacrifice many of you make on our behalf, especially in this current economy, which, by all predictions, isn't going to get any easier in the coming year. And speaking of 2023, in the next few weeks, we will be making some visible changes to our content presentation.

Every now and then in the media world, it's necessary to change things up a bit and produce things in a new and improved fashion — and you can look forward to this coming soon. In preparation, in the last few weeks, we've shortened the time of our Evening News program so we can direct more resources to new programming.

It takes a lot of people here working, not just on camera but especially behind the scenes, to crank out the volume of news, information and commentary Church Militant produces each day — and, unfortunately, we don't have unlimited resources. So we are redistributing the workload to bring you even more analysis and commentary, not just in the area of straight-up theology and faith life, but, just as importantly, in the application — the relevance of the Faith in everyday life.

Unless you're a hermit who has taken certain vows to live apart from the world as much as humanly possible in isolation from day-to-day life, then walking through the world and understanding daily the relevance of our faith is critical. Our Lord sent His followers into the world to baptize it and make disciples of all nations.

But given the complexities of today's world, the never-ending news cycle and what often appears as one debilitating effect after another (especially in the Church), the Great Commission, as it is called, can sometimes seem next to impossible. Even faithful Catholics can seem buffeted and tossed about by modern life with its constant barrage of sadness, confusion and distraction.

Evil — the power of Hell — is much stronger than our frail, fallen ability to withstand it. We cannot save ourselves. Left to our own devices, evil will always crush us underfoot. It's for this reason that the Eternal Logos was incarnated and then established a Church to last throughout time, and if we enter into it and remain faithful (even when we fall), that victory could be achieved.

That is the good news. The fight now has meaning. The victory can be won. Heaven has provided an opportunity, a tiny crack through which we can escape the pains of this world and the everlasting flames and torments of the next. For 2,000 years, this has been the view and understanding of the Church (the saints, the Fathers, the Doctors, the martyrs).

Each successive generation has had to plow through the world on the way to meriting salvation, made possible only because of the love and mercy of God. But those two parts there — the world and salvation — bring about a dynamic tension in our lives. Our faith lives must win out, but that cannot happen in isolation from the world.

In fact, Abp. Sheen used to refer to the world as the "theater of redemption." Correct! Our Lord has redeemed us — something we could never have done on our own. It's why His chief way of being understood is as savior, not teacher (although He obviously taught) or miracle worker (although He obviously performed miracles) but as savior, the bringer of salvation.

You can fall off in either direction.

A very holy, happy Christmas to you and all those dear to you. We would like to begin, today, by expressing our deepest gratitude to all of you for your support and encouragement throughout this year. As we know, it has been an exhausting one on almost every front, from politics to the culture in general and most especially, the Church. And specifically regarding the Church, we'd like to appeal to your generosity once again as the year comes to an end, to please donate to our work here at Church Militant, St. Michael's Media. We've provided a donation link for your convenience.

The Church is in a horrible state right now. We all know this. Anyone with a pulse recognizes this. What we are witnessing almost every day, in new and more terrible ways, is the culmination of decades and decades of treachery, and, yes, it stretches back to way before Vatican II. The post-council era has certainly accelerated the crisis, no doubt — but it would be naive to think this all came about sort of out of the blue.

But for those who are dumbstruck at the horror, it can seem that way, certainly. This is why the role Church Militant plays in these days is so vital to support. People can not only fall off the ship on the left; they can also fall off the right side. Schism exists as well as heresy.

The faithful must guard against both, and they must guard against each with great diligence. From our first days, this apostolate has always sought to fight the corruption by exposing it, while also guarding against overreaction to it. There are many ways to leave the Church but only one way to remain in Her.

Here at CM, we are part of the Church Militant.

First off, thank you to those of you who are donating to our end-of-the-year campaign. It is very much appreciated and keeps us doing the vital work we do. For those of you who have not yet donated and are of a mind to do so, please click on the link below and donate today — and thank you in advance.

And speaking of the vital work we do here at Church Militant and St. Michael's Media, what exactly is that work? Ultimately, it's to be used to help save souls, which is, actually, the work of every baptized soul in the Church Militant. A number of people in social media seem to be completely unaware of what that term means or what we do here in relation to it.

First, the Nicene Creed (formulated almost a century before the Bible and the foundational list of beliefs of anyone baptized) contains the basic concept right there in the explicit announcement of belief in the communion of saints. It's almost entirely overlooked by virtually every Protestant denomination there is, but you can add to that list a failure on the part of most Catholics.

As an aside, someone is going to need to sit down with me one day and explain how someone can be so adamant in expressing a theological belief but have almost not the slightest bit of knowledge about what it is they profess to believe. It's kind of disingenuous.

Anyway, for those Catholics who go to Mass and, every single Sunday, say they believe in the communion of saints but don't have any real concept of what they are professing belief in, here it is in a nutshell: The baptized who are in a state of grace (as opposed to mortal sin), are viewed from three perspectives. Those in Heaven, who have attained the beatific vision (meaning, seeing God in the face as He really is, the vision of the blessed), these comprise the Church Triumphant.

They have attained salvation and so merited it by cooperating with the graces afforded them by Our Lord's redemption for us on the Cross. Sidebar again — redemption and salvation are two entirely different things. Bad Catholics and almost all Protestants have this completely wrong. Redemption means that the guilt of our sins on the spiritual plane has been paid for and we are now able to be saved, not that we are.

Things get worse before they get better. Really?

A very holy, happy Christmas to you and all those dear to you. First off, thank you to all of you for your support and encouragement throughout this year and especially in this end-of-the-year fundraiser. Your support of our work is critical, so, again, thank you. Please click on the provided link to make whatever donation you are capable of.

Surveying the collapse of nearly all that is good, certainly on a large scale, many people are stunned, shocked — especially those of us old enough to remember a Church and nation in much different shape. That we actually sit around and have debates, discussions or even just read headlines about 10-year-olds, for example, undergoing operations to change the appearance of their bodies to the opposite sex — it's completely nuts.

No one could have thought, even one generation ago, that any of the current conditions would be so prevalent, yet here we are. All of this, of course, suggests that things will get worse. On that score, we often hear the expression "Things will get a lot worse before they get better." The first part of that is certainly true, but the back half, "before they get better," has in there an assumption not rooted in anything realistic.

Who says things will "get better" or that there is some magical trajectory that things always improve? Most of humanity is damned. It certainly doesn't apply in the spiritual war, so why would anyone think it applies in the natural order of events? It's a Pollyanna reading of historical events. Left to their own natural arrangement, things get worse, not better.

Without her, you would not have known salvation clothed in flesh.

Wrapping up our assignment in Texas, we wanted to share some thoughts on the realities of Christmas. The event, of course, happened in Bethlehem 2,000 years ago, but its impact has never ended — can't, in fact, end. So it's worth looking at what God chose to do and how He went about it and what that means for this generation, a couple of millennia later.

There are all sorts of angles and levels of the divine mystery and glory worth plumbing, but let's go to perhaps one of the most basic. Since we are, after all, celebrating a birthday, let's zero in on the woman actually giving birth, making the birthday possible — Mary, both virgin and, never forget, a general, a 12-star general.

I grew up in the U.S. military, as many of you know, and Mary as general has always been easily relatable for me — more on that in a moment. Through the divine will, the divine will from all eternity, this woman brought forth, in time, the Author of grace. Does anybody really believe that the divine will, which accorded Mary the singular highest grace any human could ever receive, would suddenly pull back and reduce her role in salvation history?

She herself, bearing God within her immaculate womb, declared that all generations would call her blessed. That little nugget, recall, is brought to us courtesy of the Holy Spirit, who inspired St. Luke to record her prophecy — which makes sense since the Holy Trinity was speaking through the young Virgin from Nazareth.

Next to the Church's authentic teaching on the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist, the teachings about Our Blessed Mother are the most commonly rejected, completely misunderstood and blasted routinely by non-Catholic Christians. Some Protestants, for example, willingly accept the teachings of the Council of Nicaea in A.D. 325, declaring and reaffirming Jesus Christ's divinity. But the same Church that declares that teaching is immediately wrong (in their eyes) when it declares in another council that *she is Theotokos, God-Bearer, the Mother of God.*

Each deserves the same verdict.

We're in Texas for the next couple of days on assignment, but as the aftershocks of the Frank Pavone case continue to reverberate through the Church in the United States, lots of questions are starting to be asked. One main one (which indeed was the focus of yesterday's Vortex) is, How has James Martin escaped such treatment?

In fact, quite the opposite: He is celebrated by bishops and given platforms in their dioceses from which to corrupt the minds and hearts of the faithful. Cardinals endorse his pro-sodomy books, writing glowing reviews of his propaganda because it dovetails nicely with their own perverted agendas.

Even the pope sits down with this man, lending an air of credibility to his filth, even giving him a post on a Vatican committee. But with all that said, an inescapable comparison arises between the pro-gay Jesuit and another infamous Martin: Martin Luther.

In 1517, Martin Luther began his march down the road to heresy and eventual excommunication. In 2017, exactly 500 years later, James Martin began his march down the road to heresy, and all that awaits him is excommunication. In fact, the question seriously needs to be asked how this man has not yet been excommunicated, sharing the same verdict from the Church that Martin Luther got whacked with. Their cases are very similar.

Although Luther worked his way up to his break from the Church through incremental steps, denying various teachings along the way, it did take some time for him to completely lose it. But when he did lose it, he lost it big-time. He denied virtually everything the Church teaches beyond the most basic, rudimentary things; but along the way, he jettisoned all sorts of other stuff.

Here's the reality: Catholic teaching is completely and totally unified because its origin is Jesus Christ, the Second Person of the Trinity. And since there is nothing but unity within the Trinity, nothing which emerges from It can be anything else than unity. So, yes, Catholic teaching is a single, unified whole. It is always an all-or-nothing proposition; it must be.

But as we said, when a conflict between Christ and Martin arose, Luther conveniently always sided with himself. Ultimately, what Martin Luther did was deny the authority of the Church, which, bottom line, is the authority of Christ. Our Blessed Lord gave His own authority to the Church, so to deny Her authority is to deny the Giver of that authority, the Son of God.

Now fast-forward 500 years later to another Martin, who, like his forebear, is also denying the authority of the Church. He's a lot more subtle about it than Luther, but make no mistake, James Martin is every bit as destructive as Luther and indeed much more. Luther at least had the integrity to get the hell out; James Martin remains, able in his collar to inflict much more damage than without it.

Martin Luther had his agenda, and James Martin has his as well. James Martin's agenda is to normalize, in the Church, sodomy and homosexual acts; to make gay sex seem as something, well, acceptable, even holy. He has declared that those who are attracted to the same sex are "born that way" — no, they aren't.

Which is worse?

We are in Texas, on assignment for a couple of days, but the Fr. Frank Pavone story is still dominating headlines in the Catholic world. The way the Church has handled this case has done nothing except continue to erode trust in the bishops.

That they can't see that (what everyone else clearly sees) is extremely disturbing. But then again, this is how these men operate. Nothing is ever transparent. Almost nothing is done above board. You can't get a straight answer about anything out of anyone attached to the establishment.

Without my speaking to specifics of the ruling from Rome that Frank Pavone has been laicized, look at everything else surrounding this case. As we discussed yesterday in The Vortex, a letter to the bishops from apostolic nuncio Abp. Christophe Pierre was leaked from inside to the Catholic News Agency.

Why? What was the purpose of leaking that letter? Who leaked it, even before Pavone or his canonist had been informed of the Holy See's decision (which had been made a whole month earlier)? Bad form, fellows, even for your lot. Imagine being delivered a death sentence, which laicization is for a priest, and everyone else knowing it before you. And then, broadening the circle, we have to engage in some what-about questions. What about James Martin and his case compared to Frank Pavone's? That is a more than fair comparison to be made.

And people of goodwill look at all this and rightly protest not necessarily the decision to kick out Fr. Pavone (a decision shrouded in secrecy and God knows what else, including the possibility of ill will) but the hypocrisy of saying disobedience to a local bishop is so bad, but disobedience to the teachings of the Church — not so much.

That is what is at the heart of the outrage. And bishops, that outrage is merited and your lot owns every bit of it. You are detestable cowards who run the Church like your own private fiefdom. That doesn't mean you don't have the authority — you absolutely do. But your abuse of that authority will damn the lot of you. Just as any other person who betrays a trust, an authority, an oath. Repent, or die in your sins. And no amount of talking points or a nice little memo from a nuncio will get a hearing at your judgment.

James Martin needs to be kicked out of the priesthood, and someone needs to file a canon law case against him for heresy. Heresy is far worse than blasphemy. The bishops won't because he's one of them. That will not bode well when they are being charged by the Supreme Shepherd with disobedience to Him.

And now, let's begin with today's Vortex...

From top to bottom.

By now, every connected Catholic has heard the news about Fr. Frank Pavone not just being silenced but kicked out of the priesthood. Until Church Militant was able to obtain a copy of the official letter, the only public source was an article published in Catholic News Agency, which is owned by EWTN. Since Mother Angelica was forced to step down from her leadership role at the network, there are serious questions surrounding EWTN and, now, CNA's integrity.

In a story this explosive, credibility and integrity are everything. To that point, full disclosure: I have personally known Fr. Pavone since our overlapping days at St. Joseph's Seminary in New York, known as Dunwoodie back in the late 1980s. He was every bit committed to the cause of life then as he is now.

We have been in touch multiple times over the many years we have known each other, and this time is no different. I spoke with Father, Sunday (late morning), and we spoke for about 40 minutes. He was not evasive or nontransparent. Every question I put to him, he answered directly. Transparency is the heart of the claim here.

Catholic News Agency, which seems woefully unaware of journalistic standards, has still not, as of this recording, published the letter. Church Militant has — it's right there, available by clicking on the link. Yet CNA, in a major breach of journalistic professionalism, sent an email to Fr. Pavone asking for his response to a letter he had not seen nor was even aware of. In the news world, you just do not do that.

It's a breach of every ethical standard to essentially blackmail someone to respond to something about him that the person has not seen, and — very important here —  that you will not show him. This leads to the much larger question of credibility and corruption, and the lack of justice and just plain old fairness, which is now standard in the Church. Bishops will not answer questions. The Catholic media who obey them don't play by the ethical rules, and no one gets to question the bishops or their lackeys or their tactics.

To report this story at all without also publishing the letter is a crossing of the journalistic line, which is just the latest in a long series of such crossings. So, as it stands now, the hierarchy once again has its way. A priest who challenged corruption routinely is shunted to the sidelines.

They have no accountability for their actions, no transparency, no having to explain anything, and their little in-house mouthpiece posing as a "news" agency gets to break the code of professional conduct to carry their water. And, again, they are likewise unaccountable. The Catholic media world is a joke. And then, of course, looking to capitalize on the news, there are the expected calls to go into schism from that side of the nutjob world.

One major outfit has, of course, cranked up the sign-this-petition machinery to get your email and later send you donation requests. It's disgusting. But one thing that did come out loud and clear and without any question surrounding it: Fr. Pavone said, in the face of all this, "I'm sticking with the Church. No matter how corrupt the various clergy may be, it's never an excuse to go into schism or heresy."
