No cross, no glory.

Increasingly, men of goodwill are realizing and saying out loud that America's decline is owing to losing a deep spiritual war. But even as that reality is coming into focus for many, others are abandoning religion in general, Christianity in particular and Catholicism specifically.

It hasn't quite hit desperation mode yet, but it has reached a level of high alert as various generic Christian groups, as well as some Catholics, take to social media and various public relations campaigns to peddle Christ and the Good News. The problem, however, is — put simply — it is Christ without the Cross that is being peddled: "cool" Jesus, "relevant" Christianity.

What's being presented — and consequently rejected — is a more worldly Christ: easy to relate to, a comfortable Christ, the answer to all your little problems. The world is rejecting this cozy Christ as the elixir to worldly problems precisely because the world provides much more stimulating solutions to the problems it creates.

You name it:

- Sex
- Porn
- Drugs
- Ego
- Power
- Money
- Fame

Comfortable Christ can't hold a candle to any of that. I mean, who wants to listen to the personal opinion of some preacher about what a passage from Scripture means when they can be getting high and having sex with whoever wants to hook up with them? In the end, the world and all its intoxications are much more appealing than Christ without His Cross.

With no end in sight.

There's a meme floating around the internet we'd like to share with you because of how correct its 60,000-foot view is: "We live in a society where homosexuals lecture us on morals, transvestites lecture us on human biology, baby killers lecture us on human rights and socialists lecture us on economics."

As Catholics, we could add to that: "We live in a Church where heretics lecture us on doctrine, schismatics lecture us on obedience to tradition, money-grubbing bishops lecture us on social justice and modernist theologians lecture us on our ignorance of theology." No matter where you turn — the world or the Church — it's an absolute clown world. Consider the insanity today emanating from both Rome and Washington, D.C., and, moreover, consider the further insanity that arises in response to all that in both spheres.

When the Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl on the leg of kicker Harrison Butker, the Catholic trad world went wild online when his brown scapular was seen on the field. Great — all faithful Catholics adopt, wear and love the scapular. However, one wonders just how effusive the praise from the trad bigmouths online would have been if Butker did not attend the Latin Mass. The Latin Mass has become an idol to them, and anything goes in that world so long as it's related to the Latin Mass.

It could be just looking the other way on clerical sex abuse in that world because, you know — the Latin Mass. It could be defending schism in that world because, you know — the Latin Mass. It could mean an overweening spiritual arrogance and hubris because, you know — the Latin Mass. It's like they should post placards and burn down Novus Ordo parishes chanting, "TLM lives matter."

...

The "silver-bullet" notion that all we need to solve the crisis in the Church is the Latin Mass is absurd on its face. Of course, it's true — and Church Militant is on record, for many years, talking about and attacking the daily abuses in many (if not most) usual parishes — that reverent liturgy is absolutely a key component of the much-needed restoration. But to isolate reverence to just one liturgical rite is nuts.

Isn't really Jesus at all.

Have you noticed the virtual flood of "Jesus" messaging going on these days almost everywhere? And you can bet that Satan loves every bit of it because none of it presents authentic Jesus — none of it. For example, the "He Gets Us" outfit is spending a billion dollars, including on the Super Bowl, to explain to us how Jesus "gets us" — like followers of Christ don't already know that.

Likewise, the streaming smash hit The Chosen, an ecumenical offering. Always beware that word, "ecumenical," when it comes to a mass audience. It really means "watered down so as few people object or are offended as possible," completely sidestepping the reality that the authentic Jesus is offensive. The Gospels go out of their way to inform us of that.

Then there's Franklin Graham, son of the late Rev. Billy Graham, who is also pounding the pulpit about the need for Jesus back in American life. "We Need More Pro-Life Christians Back in Office," the tweet says. Does that include so-called Christians who, on the one hand, claim to be followers of Christ, while, on the other hand, accept divorce and remarriage as well as contraception?

Then, of course, there was the very popular fad "What Would Jesus Do?" memorialized in rubber wristbands and T-shirts for a number of years. In short, "Jesus" makes a comeback every few years or so in American culture, and yet, somehow, American culture such as it is keeps getting worse. How is that possible?

...

All "The Chosen" Christ does is make an appeal to your emotions. And that's why you see nothing in these historical trends except emotional responses. There is no appeal to the intellect. No appeal to meditate on the divine truths, to plumb the mysteries of God, to completely change one's life and thinking and orientation.

Saint Paul says, by way of warning, "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for ever." (Hebrews 13:8) Just because a soul possesses goodwill does not mean that soul cannot be duped, nor does it mean it will be saved. Almost nothing worthwhile on earth comes without pain and sacrifice. Usually, comfort and "feeling good" don't even enter into the equation in the day-to-day.

One more nail in the bishops' coffin.

Late last week, Biden's Pentagon released a shocking update for military personnel, greatly expanding access to abortion for active-duty soldiers as well as their dependents. The new policy provides for fully paid travel expenses for troops who have to go out of state to obtain an abortion and up to three weeks of leave, including to accompany a dependent or spouse.

What's more, Biden ordered all branches of the military to have the policy operational within 30 days. There is also, contained within its pages, a warning to any commander who might try to slow down the process in hopes of getting the women to reconsider — for example, by speaking to a chaplain or seeking further medical counsel.

According to the Military Times, a senior defense official said,

"We wrote the policy for the 95% of commanders that are going to do the right thing.... We're going to have to go after those commanders who do the bad thing, just like we go after toxic commanders. And so we'll have to rely on current policy and procedures in those situations."

Convert or die.

There is a widening split within the Republican Party and it's not the obvious Trump vs. DeSantis issue. It's the rank and file vs. the Party elites. It's not exactly like that's new to the Party, but in recent years, it's become apparent even to the most Pollyanna Republican on Main Street that the elites don't represent them anymore — not that they really ever did.

A recent survey by the American Principles Project — APP — of Grand Old Party primary voters shows that Republican voters are much more interested in defending American culture than so-called conservative elites. The culture wars have been of little interest to the Paul Ryan–Mitch McConnell ruling class, and that disinterest stretches back decades.

Multiple so-called conservative outlets simply dismissed the culture wars, sensing that Americans in general were reasonably down with the sexual revolution and its aftermath. They were correct in that analysis. It's only now — in the wake of the massive devastation brought on by the 1960s-era train wreck — that more than a few are beginning to wake up.

Quoting from survey results of those GOP primary voters, "There was also significant GOP voter enthusiasm for candidates who back federal laws banning permanent sex-changing medical procedures for minors (76 percent), prohibiting biological males from competing in girls' sports (69 percent), and requiring age-verification measures for pornographic websites to protect kids (86 percent) ... ."

...

We are now in the out-of-control clown world portion of the collapse. And no amount of fighting about the Second Amendment is going to fix that. America is sick, and only a healthy dose of Catholicism can cure it — because only Catholicism has the intellectual heft to overcome all these issues and provide an answer for all of this. Americans need to convert or watch this nation die.

They really don't like us.

That FBI report discussing Church Militant and naming some other groups in a list in the appendix is getting a lot of attention — increased attention. The New York Post just recently published its analysis of it, as did The Signal and The Washington Post, including an insightful follow-up piece by The Federalist. There's a portion of the Federalist piece we'd like to highlight for you because we think the publication may be onto something.

The context of the passage is that the U.S. bishops' conference has still not said anything publicly about the FBI dossier — which is beyond strange. In fact, the only bishop to say anything is the bishop whose diocese is home to the local field office that produced the dossier — Richmond.

Bishop Barry Knestout of that Richmond diocese only released a statement after a phone-call campaign by faithful Catholics to his office demanding he say something. So days after the report was leaked and it was gaining media traction and that call-in campaign, he reluctantly released a statement saying what the FBI did was bad. Thanks, Bishop.

More questions?

About that FBI report that got leaked showing the FBI targeting Catholics, and the bureau's weird yet revealing response to it — it was leaked from the Richmond field office and posted on the site UncoverDC by former special agent and whistleblower, Kyle Seraphin, himself a Catholic. In addition to a list of various groups, Church Militant was singled out on Page 4 of the eight-page dossier as aligning with "anti-Semitic, anti-immigrant, anti-LGBT and white supremacy ideology," which — in the FBI's incorrect estimation — also overlaps with an embrace of the Traditional Latin Mass.

You talk about horrible research. But there's more here to see than meets the eye. Most importantly, this is part of a much larger tapestry; that if you are conservative in your politics and religion — not an uncommon mixture at all — you are immediately suspect by Biden's Department of Justice. This dossier is only the latest in a series of steps by the FBI to harass and intimidate conservatives — especially Christians and, in particular, Catholics.

Think of the report that was released early on in Biden's administration, claiming the greatest threat to America's security is homegrown terrorism — domestic terrorists and extremists — which is shorthand for White Christian nationalists, which is a dog whistle to label anyone with conservative political views (which often includes Christians) as enemies of the State. Well, certainly in view of the increasing reality that the "State" under Biden is anti-God, anti-religion and so forth, conservatives in a sense are enemies of the State — that State.

But not everything.

The hurt and anger and suffering faithful Catholics (laity and clergy) feel today is unprecedented in the Church's history. And every last bit of it can be laid directly and squarely at the feet of the bishops. For more than 60 years, these men have allowed heresy to flourish almost unchecked.

As a result — a direct response to those heresies — schisms are now exploding across the globe. What in the name of heaven would anyone expect? Outrage doesn't excuse schism, but it does explain it. Schism is a reaction to heresy. It stands second in line, but it is in line nonetheless. But we should be very clear here: The fact that there is a line at all is directly attributable to a lack of effective leadership on the part of the hierarchy.

While Vatican II suggested a blueprint, for example, of modifications to the liturgy, when that dog and pony show pulled into town, most parishes went absolutely bananas with felt banners and crappy guitar music and gay priests flitting around the sanctuary.

Can the trains be far behind?

A few days ago, an internal FBI report was leaked, drawing an association between what it calls "Radical, Traditional Catholics" (RTC, for short) and what the bureau says is "racist, bigoted, white nationalist political views." The name of the eight-page dossier is "Racially or Ethnically Motivated Violent Extremists (RMVE) and their interests in 'Radical-Traditionalist Catholics' or 'RTCs.'"

Church Militant is named directly on Page 4 of that FBI report and, on scanning through it, is the only media group mentioned by name. The eight-page dossier strains to make any coherent argument that believing, practicing Catholics hate Jews, Blacks, gays and immigrants — a subject treated almost as a throwaway assumption, like it's just a given.

The FBI dossier then moves from its incorrect connection between these "attitudes" — which, again, do not exist — and the threat of actual violence against pro-abortion people. Without the slightest justification, much less actual proof, the unidentified writer of the dossier swings wildly between theological issues and political issues, making connections that just don’t exist.

Since Church Militant is mentioned by name and singly, we are going to take this moment to respond officially to this reckless pack of lies, misinformation and obvious political targeting by an increasingly woke and leftist-leaning FBI. First, let's talk about the theological idiocy the FBI report contains.

...

This is beginning to have a sniff of ancient Rome under Nero. But maybe we're getting ahead of ourselves just a bit. The report presents the horribly reasoned case that Catholic theology, at least as it exists in these schismatic circles, which again Church Militant is just lumped into by the FBI's "Department of Theological Analysis," also hates Jews, Blacks, gays, women and immigrants.

Those hatreds, which don't exist, then create some kind of natural bridge, according to the FBI, to White nationalists in the political realm. And therefore, the FBI deems it a high priority to keep an eye on Catholics. These bad assumptions and crazy connections and flat-out stupid conclusions, again based on equally retarded press accounts from the Left, show just how unhinged the government has become, and its powers weaponized against faithful Catholics.

These schisms must end.

Sometime, likely in the not-too-distant future, an earthquake is going to erupt in the Church, and its epicenter will be the ranch of Mel Gibson in Agoura Hills, California. Gibson is well-known for his splendid movies and acting ability. In terms of his faith, he is a sedevacantist — a word that comes from the Latin meaning "empty chair" — meaning, "The Throne of St. Peter has no occupant; it's empty."

There are different "camps" of sedevacantists, and while there are some divisions among them, there is broad agreement that Vatican II was bad and that there has not been a valid pope since the death of Pius XII in 1958. And yeah, you heard that right — not a valid pope in 65 years and counting.

And it's that "and counting" part that is becoming a problem for some sedes. It will come as no surprise that at least some sedevacantists do not accept bishops ordained in the Latin church under the completely revised rites after Vatican II. This inevitably leads to a sede priest personnel crisis — they need to replenish their ranks — and fast. This is where Mel Gibson starts to get involved.

A few years ago, a 97-year-old, retired bishop in Texas caught the attention of sedevacantists — Gibson included — after the bishop declared (with many nonsedevacantists) that Francis was not the validly elected pope. In 2020, Gibson met with this bishop, who claims that he was consecrated in the pre-Vatican II rite of ordination. Therefore, if he ordained a priest, that priest would fit the bill of not being a Vatican II priest, and thus be "validly" ordained.

One excuse after another.

On the reality of the Society of Saint Pius X being in schism, perhaps the most vociferous protest to that by SSPX supporters is "But, but, Pope Francis gave the priests of the Society faculties to absolve and marry people, so, therefore, they can't be in schism." That wildly false conclusion is even trumpeted, unthinkingly or deceptively, by internet Catholic media types and websites. It is simply false. Being extended the faculties to absolve or marry does not regularize a priest or make the SSPX no longer in schism.

What Pope Francis did during the 2016 Jubilee Year of Mercy, in order to encourage confessions by the faithful, was grant faculties to the schismatic SSPX so that those laymen who follow them would receive valid absolution. Notice a point here not talked about very often, especially by the Catholic internet/media types who support the schism: In order for him to grant them faculties, that means prior to that, they did not possess the faculties. But the granting of faculties does not bring about the end of a schism.

The pope, whoever he may be, has supreme jurisdiction over the Church. And if he so desires, he may grant faculties to a priest — even if the priest is suspended or in schism. This is a matter of ecclesiastical law, again, of which the pope is the supreme lawgiver. As we discussed last week, it is the pope who has ultimate temporal jurisdiction over the Church — not the laity, not the bishops and so forth — the pope. If he dispenses with an ecclesiastical law for some reason, then it is dispensed with.

It looks Catholic — that's the problem.

At multiple times throughout the Church's 2,000 years, schisms have erupted, and adherents to these schisms first develop and then come to embrace the idea that the Church is in error about one thing or another, and they want no part of that error. So they break away and believe themselves to be breaking away from error, and, therefore, they are the true Church.

They refer to themselves in many ways: "The Remnant," "Eternal Rome," this or that "Catholic Church" — but they are all schismatic. Most famously, even the Eastern Orthodox fall into this camp. When Church historians, in fact, reference the "Great Schism," it is the 11th-century schism with the Orthodox that is being talked about.

When it comes to heresy, most often they eventually leave the Church — although they have remained somewhat stubborn about that in recent decades. But historically, they leave, and, over the ensuing generations, Catholics no longer have any kind of relationship with them. They simply left. They no longer even claim anything Catholic, at least in substance. There might be some overlap, but the differences are pretty stark. They are a different religion, distinct from Catholicism.

But when it comes to schism, an entirely different aspect is at play. It's not that they so much leave but stick around and claim a legitimacy they do not actually possess. They keep the Catholic shingle hanging above the entrance to the door, but inside the store — not so much. This is where a type of seduction comes into play. It looks Catholic, and in some way, still is — valid sacraments, for example, but what could be called a "breakaway mentality" has set in, and that rules the day.

The approach they have and present is sometimes found in the political realm when, for example, Ronald Reagan types will say, "I didn't leave the Democratic party. The Democratic party left me." That certainly rings true in politics but in the Church — not so much. In fact, it's impossible. The world of politics does not enjoy the promise of divine protection the Church does.

Yes or no.

Some Catholics, understandably, don't like all the infighting about matters of heresy and schism. They call it a circular firing squad, for example. "Can't we all just get along? We all believe the same thing. Stop the back-and-forth attacks." "Unite the clans," even.

While the sentiment does have some validity to it because we don't think most people actually enjoy confrontation and fighting, etc., we'd also like to propose a couple of sayings for people to ponder: "It is better to be divided by truth than to be united in error."

And secondly, "It is better to speak the truth that hurts — then heals — than falsehood that comforts and then kills." This is exactly what Our Blessed Lord did. Differences in substance simply cannot be papered over, no matter how emotionally tempting that may be.

And within the Catholic world, what is surfacing right now is that there are substantial differences not just between believing Catholics and modernist Catholics but actually between believing Catholics, meaning those who say they believe the Faith. But, that said, there is more to believing the Faith than just accepting the teachings themselves. There is also accepting the authority — the authority of the Church, for example, when She says the Second Vatican Council was a legitimate council of the Church.

When it comes to the matter of schism that we have been talking about for a week or so and whether Francis is actually the pope, or if he never was or was and then stopped being pope, the real underlying driving force behind all of that is the belief that Vatican II was a heretical council — meaning it was not legitimate.

...

You need to ask them nonstop until they answer you directly and go on the record. Yes or no, the Church has declared that Vatican II was a legitimate council? Yes or no, do you agree? It's a very simple question and answer. Anything other than a direct yes or no tells you everything you need to know.

Always evil.

When the sacraments are administered, they must be both valid and licit (meaning legal). Valid is easy — the form and matter must both be present and correct, and the minister must do what the Church intends. Validity is a really low bar. It should be, so grace can be conferred. If the priest says, "I absolve you" with his blessing and is doing what the Church intends, your absolution is valid. It's not that complicated.

However, the question of a sacrament being licit or illicit is another case. A priest or bishop can validly perform a sacrament, but doing so without permission or jurisdiction makes it illicit, which means he didn't have the authority to do so.

When a priest is ordained (receives the sacrament of Holy Orders), he is a valid priest — period. But if the bishop who administered the sacrament validly did not have the authority to do so, then the question of the sacrament being licit comes up. This is what happened in the scandalous case of the schismatic bishops of the Society of Saint Pius X going on to ordain priests for the breakaway group.

The men they have ordained are validly ordained (again, a pretty low bar). But they are forbidden from offering Mass because they do not have the authority to do so because the Church has removed that authority, which She alone grants.

Ten years after the SSPX bishops were excommunicated under John Paul, a commission he set up to address the schism and find a way to reunite them (which has still not happened) wrote a letter worth revisiting because of its massive implications. In that letter, which was an answer to a letter to them from a concerned Catholic in Australia, they said the following with regard to the ongoing priestly ordinations in the SSPX:

While the priests of the Society of St. Pius X are validly ordained, they are also suspended a divinis, that is they are forbidden by the Church from celebrating the Mass and the sacraments because of their illicit (or illegal) ordination to the diaconate and the priesthood without proper incardination (cf. canon 265).

Pay special attention to that phrase: They (SSPX priests) are forbidden by the Church from celebrating the Mass. That means every single time an SSPX priest or bishop offers Mass, he is doing so in disobedience. A priest may not assume to himself his own authority to dispense the sacraments or offer Mass. They do not belong to him. The sacraments belong to the Church, not to the priest.

Add another one to the list.

In the almost 18 years Church Militant has been around, we've shifted gears on a few occasions as events warranted and the situation called for it. When we first started, it was strictly catechesis, apologetics, Church history, etc. The flagship show was and remains The One True Faith — 118 hours of Church teaching on practically everything. We also, during that time, produced close to an additional 100 hours on apologetics, Church history and so forth.

Then, 2009 arrived, and Obama went to Notre Dame. That was the first of the gear shifting we underwent here. That revealed to us in stark terms that something was very wrong in the hierarchy. So we started out on that foray, adding to the already existing abundance of theological productions.

And so it was until the next major shift, 2016, when Hillary declared, on the campaign trail, that religious doctrines and teachings would have to change, in a speech before a radical feminist group. Then 2018 arrived and the revelations about Theodore McCarrick, and it became an all-out assault on the cover-up hierarchy, especially here in the United States.

For all of those years, developing what we have done here from the beginning (the massive theological content) and then adding all these other aspects on top of that, we were largely speaking out against heresy — all sorts of heresies. As you might imagine, that garnered no love from the hierarchy as they have been the recipient of much-needed criticism.

Now, in 2023, Church Militant has arrived at another such moment. Without sacrificing anything that has gone on before — the theology, politics, the investigations — it is now time to step forward and embrace the next aspect: the fight against schism. It will require, in certain ways, a different approach from how heresy is treated; but, nonetheless, they both lead innocent souls out of the Church.

And that's not fake news.

Catholic internet personalities and media types have a duty to bring you the entire story when relaying to you what's going on in the Church as well as the world as it relates to the Church. To cherry-pick data points and deliberately leave out other data points is dishonest. With the exception of straight-up lying, like CNN and others engage in, there is, essentially, little difference in that reporting philosophy.

Even in the legal world, there is a requirement that if the police or prosecutors come across information that weakens their case and is favorable to the defense, they have a legal obligation to hand that information over to the defense. The point is to arrive at the truth, and nowhere should that be more applicable than in so-called media circles in the Catholic world.

But too often we find straight-up commentary as well as commentary thinly disguised as news showing reckless disregard for the truth. This is especially true in what is not relayed to you. Catholic media and internet personalities quite often will support a certain person or cause and align themselves with it without sufficient vetting or research.

It's a kind of populist reporting that really isn't reporting at all, at least not in any professional sense. The recent Frank Pavone story is a classic example. Big-name conservative Catholic outfits and individuals trampled all over each other championing his cause, jumping on the bandwagon, pounding their chests as defenders of yet another "good and holy" priest.

Whether they did this as just a knee-jerk reaction, uncritically going along with it — or more calculatingly, saw it as a chance to push a narrative that makes them look good by association — we don't know. What we do know is that either of those avenues displays a woeful lack of regard for their supporters. And as it turns out, with the revelations emerging after Pavone's laicization, those outfits now have egg on their faces (and deserve to).

That's what happens when you either unthinkingly or calculatingly rush to push a cause and report only some cherry-picked information. That underlying philosophy, which is the order of the day in many Catholic media circles, undercuts their credibility. And it raises all sorts of questions about other celebrity priests or causes whose bandwagons these same internet personalities and media outfits support and push. You, the viewers, are beginning more and more to ask questions, to examine what you are being told is the story.

We know because we are seeing the "great awakening," the red-pilling now beginning regarding "reporting" in the Catholic world. We are now getting more emails and comments, not to mention having private discussions with others who are beginning to see this. For example, to give a spin on unapproved apparitions — in some cases, debunked apparitions or highly questionable apparitions or so-called mystics — and treat these like they are facts, is dishonest or completely uninformed.

It's an insult to viewers to bring so-called experts on the air and speak about these types of things as though they are simply true, without asking tough questions. But — and this is what Catholic viewers, thankfully, are beginning to awaken to — there is a desire on the part of some in Catholic media to avoid tough questions around causes or people they support because they have tied their entire enterprise to these stories:

- "It's the end of the world."
- "We are in the end days."
- "The Church is no longer the Church."

The list of baseless claims goes on and on. And any interview, any daily news that can be seized upon that helps push their narrative is, immediately, "news." Are the alleged apparitions, for example, at Garabandal worth an honest story? Maybe, but not without also presenting everything questionable about them.

And now, let's begin with today's Vortex...

Two!

When Our Blessed Lord made Simon Bar-Jonah the head of the Apostles, He did so by saying, "And to you I give the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven." (Matthew 16:19) Notice: keys — plural — more than one key. That reality is expressed on the Vatican's flag, which has two keys. One key represents the pope's spiritual authority; the other represents his temporal authority.

And moreover, they intersect each other to show that (sometimes) both these jurisdictions overlap. The one key, the spiritual one, represents the teaching authority. And when it is challenged or attempted to be taken, that is heresy — denying a teaching or teachings of the Church. The other key, the temporal authority one, is violated when someone denies or ignores the temporal authority the pope exercises over the Church — that is schism.

The point is, there is more than just one way to challenge the Church: either through Her teachings or Her authority. Today, both things are happening. Some challenge the teachings; others are challenging the authority. Some are engaging in heresy, others in schism. There's more than one side of the Barque of St. Peter a Catholic can fall from.

Schism is just as much of a threat to the life of a faithful Catholic as heresy. And they both damage the Church, sometimes severely. Just look at the schism with Eastern Orthodoxy 1,000 years ago and the effects of the Protestant heresy 500 years ago. This is why both heresy and schism need to be nipped in the bud as soon as possible — because once they gain traction, they tend to spin out of control. And once that happens, there's no real coming back, as history shows us.

The point that both heretics and schismatics seem to miss is this: It's not the teachings that need to be believed in or the Faith itself; it's the Church — the Church's divine charter, Her mission — ultimately, Her authority. The teachings proceed from all that, so it is the Church that must be believed in, not the teachings or the Faith per se. The teachings flow from the Church, not the other way around.

And now, let's begin with today's Vortex...

Even if he's a bad one — a really bad one.

Following up on last week's Vortex — when we talked about misinformation routinely being pumped out by Catholic social media types — it's time to dig a little deeper. One of the routine pieces of misinformation being bandied about is that Jorge Bergoglio is not really the pope. And let's hasten to say this right up front, so everyone is clear: The denial or heavy suggestion that Francis is not the pope is actually part of a larger agenda that is not specifically stated by many of these folks.

Many notable Catholic internet types want to drive people out of the Church and into the arms of the schismatic Society of Saint Pius X and the even more extreme sedevacantist group Society of Saint Pius V. Behind the scenes — meaning they won't come right out and tell you — they are in league with the schism. They will deny it's a schism, or they will say "it's complicated" or "it's not clear" or "there's not really a way to know."

First, those are lies told by them. Behind the scenes, they have cast their lot with schismatics. They just won't come out and tell you because maintaining the illusion of being neutral provides them with a cover to keep advancing this agenda. Make no mistake, they are all on board with the schism — 100% — and they need to have the "you know what" to come out and say it.

Pope John Paul called the SSPX "schismatic" when they broke away from the Church in 1988. Pope Benedict said their problems are "doctrinal," and they have no canonical standing and exercise no "legitimate ministries." Pope Francis, in the accompanying letter to his motu proprio Traditionis Custodes, specifically called the SSPX "the schismatic movement of Msgr. Lefebvre."

That's three popes in a row. So if you have a problem with the schismatic SSPX being called "schismatic," take it up with the popes, not Church Militant. And further, you will never hear these social media "Catholic" outfits ever repeat these declarations of schism by the popes. That would completely derail their "it's-not-very-clear" strategy.

...

A large piece of the strategy that drives people into schism is to constantly bash Francis and, without actually saying it directly, maintain he's not the pope. Some will say he's not the pope because Benedict was blackmailed into resigning and therefore was still the real pope. Benedict denied all that nonsense. Others will say Benedict did resign, but the conclave to elect Bergoglio was rigged. So while Benedict was no longer the pope, Francis is not either.

And still others will take the tack that Benedict actually resigned and the conclave was valid, but since Francis got elected, he has become a heretic and, therefore, now is no longer pope. It doesn't matter which of those three roads a person travels down. They each arrive at the same destination: "Francis is not the pope."

Once that seed is planted, the way is paved to now say, "Well then, the Church is no longer the Church and it really resides over here" — in what three popes have said is a schismatic movement. Viewers and supporters must understand how they are being played here. There is an agenda behind the narrative that Francis is not the pope. Don't fall for it.

For way too long.

As confusion in the Church mounts and piles up and proliferates and multiplies, one major reason is because there are never any real consequences for those who add to the confusion. For decades now, Rome has refused to denounce all of this in any meaningful way.

Sure, every now and then something is declared bad or not to be done or whatever, but then there is virtually no enforcement, and that's when something is actually even said — few words, even fewer actions. And it doesn't matter if we're talking about heresy or schism; Rome actually does very little.

James Martin is given just as much of a wide berth as the schismatic SSPX. At least the SSPX has been declared in schism and/or lacking any canonical standing by the last three popes. Martin, on the other hand, gets virtually no verbal condemnation.

But neither Martin nor the schismatics ever actually get disciplined; nothing ever happens to them. In short, they never feel the consequences of their assaults against the Church. And make no mistake here — they are assaults. Assaults of a different kind, sure, but assaults nonetheless.

There are, after all, two keys: one for teaching, the other for jurisdiction. Martin attacks one key, schismatics the other. And this lack of actual discipline stretches back quite a number of decades. Homosexuality in the seminaries was condemned by then-Cdl. Ratzinger, but nothing was ever really done about it.

Likewise, the movement begun by Abp. Marcel Lefebvre was declared schismatic at its inception by Pope John Paul, and Lefebvre was excommunicated. But again, nothing — or perhaps better stated, not enough — was done. And from a practical point of view, both heretics and schismatics get to claim the same mantle of defense: "Rome has not canceled us."?

Not being punished is not an endorsement, a blessing of the Church. It's just yet another example of the woeful administration by the hierarchy of bringing discipline to the most errant sons of the Church. Somewhere, a few generations ago, Rome lost practically all taste for discipline, and the result has been chaos.

It's like Catholic QAnon.

Fake news — it's the bane of the culture right now and was first called out by Donald Trump in the 2016 campaign. It has obviously since become a staple of the American lexicon. Of course, since Trump took that label from the Marxist media and turned it around on them, those same media types have developed a new label, much more formal sounding: "misinformation."

Misinformation became the watchword for the wave of censorship that followed on social media accounts everywhere. Had it not been for Elon Musk's Twitter purchase, that would likely still rule the day across the board. That said, misinformation has become a problem and it is not limited to the secular realm. There is a wave of Catholic misinformation flooding social media almost daily. And for Catholics with a microphone or a platform, this borders on the unforgivable sin.

Any Catholic claiming to be faithful and speaking routinely to an audience has a duty before Almighty God to tell the truth fully to the best of his ability — period. Making an honest mistake is one thing, although even those should be far apart and few in between — and then acknowledged when they happen. But the stream of clickbait headlines and show names and talking points — just to get eyeballs — is beneath the dignity of someone who calls himself or herself "Catholic," especially in faithful, orthodox circles.

Over the past few weeks, the off-the-wall claims and discussions and pure, unsupported conjecture have been alarming:

- UFOs are a precursor to the end of the world
- Biden installed a Baphomet mirror in the White House
- Cdl. Pell was murdered
- George Neumayr was murdered

The list of crazy goes on and on. There are many reasons why this is wrong and unethical, even immoral in some cases.

First, for quite some time now, the line has been blurred between actual news — meaning factual, verifiable information — and the "commentary" that inevitably follows in its wake. It's not enough for Catholic social media and internet personalities to simply grab some headline and then recklessly wax on about it, especially if it's just for clickbait. Since the line is so blurred, people who are listening oftentimes do not make the distinction between nutty commentary supported by nothing more than thoughts swirling around in a host's head and the actual data point — the piece of accurate information.

But only one really matters.

Since Pope Benedict died less than a month ago, four books (count them — one, two, three, four) have appeared pointing to massive problems in Rome, concentrating on Francis' papacy but by no means limited to that. One book is from the deceased Cdl. George Pell; another is from Cdl. Gerhard Müller; another is from Benedict's personal secretary, Abp. Georg Gänswein, and, of course, the latest bombshell by Pope Benedict himself, published posthumously.

It is Benedict's book that bears the most scrutiny and examination because of the breadth of what it covers: namely, the vast crisis in the Church — not just the Francis pontificate. This is the angle Church Militant has taken for the last 10 years; that, despite the acceleration of the crisis that has occurred under Francis, it is beyond naive to pin this on him. This pontificate is the end result (the consequence) of decades of corruption in the hierarchy. This is what Benedict's book is about.

Benedict (who, remember, was the prefect for the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith for a quarter of a century under Pope John Paul) outlines multiple evils and failures, including what he calls "gay clubs" in seminaries — especially seminaries here in the United States. One of those he was pointing to was right here in the archdiocese of Detroit: St. John's Seminary in Plymouth, where, for years, seminarians were shown gay porn by the rector, who went on to become a bishop in Saginaw.

Judgment is coming.

When Democrats in the U.S. House banded together and voted to deny life-saving measures to babies who survived abortion, much was revealed. New York's Jerry Nadler said it would be an awful thing to transport such a baby to a hospital because he might die on the way — seriously. But something else was revealed as well: the total silence of multiple U.S. bishops in all this.

Biden and Pelosi, because of their high profiles, have gotten all the press, but 64 — count them, 64 — "Catholic" Democrats in the U.S. House voted in favor of killing babies who survived abortion. Church Militant did a little research here and looked into the overlap between those Democrats' congressional districts and their home dioceses — meaning, who are the bishops of these Democrats?

What we found was this: More than 40 U.S. bishops are the local bishops for those 64 Democrats. Some of the bishops (for example, José Gomez of Los Angeles) have multiple congressmen in their archdioceses, which is, of course, to be expected because the size of the archdiocese overlaps with various congressional districts.
