I love how it matches her sweater perfectly. That is some fine attention to detail.

youtube mirror.

From the video description:

"How knitting rose from basic craft to the height of popular fashion in the 20th century. It's a craft that has given us scratchy jumpers, sexy bathing costumes and the infamous poodle loo cover, has sustained Britain through the hardships of war and shown a mother's love to generations of little ones. Today, knitwear has become a staple of every wardrobe thanks to a prince's golfing taste, The Beatles and 80s breakfast television. Warm-hearted and surprising, this is the story of the people's craft, and a very British one at that."

This is a great method of ensuring your yarn will make a proper-fitting hat.

The tutorial also gives you instructions to complete your hat.

A Father Transformed Data of his Son’s First Year of Sleep into a Knitted Blanket (article below)     (www.thisiscolossal.com)

"Seung Lee tracked the first year of his baby’s sleep schedule with the BabyConnect app, which lets you export data to CSV. Choosing to work with six minute intervals, Lee then converted the CSVs into JSON (using Google Apps Script and Python) which created a reliable pattern for knitting. The frenetic lines at the top of the blanket indicate the baby’s unpredictable sleep schedule right after birth. We can see how the child grew into a more reliable schedule as the lines reach more columnar patterns."

The pattern is from a booklet of knitting patterns the women at home would use to support their men in the field.

Rifle Mittens for Infantry - knitting pattern [PDF]     (files.catbox.moe)

From the description:

"This is an historically accurate pattern brought up -to-date for the contemporary knitter. The original pattern is Rifle Mittens for Infantry on page 67 in Knitting and Sewing: How to Make Useful Articles for Men in the Army and Navy by Maud Churchill Nicoll, George H. Doran Company (1918).

Infantry men needed protection from the cold but required bare trigger finger and thumb in order to shoot. This accessory, worked in fingering weight wool, provided warmth without compromising tactile sensation.

The pattern sample was knit in Karabella Aurora 4 which is a sport weight yarn, but a fingering weight yarn also produces a men’s medium, while DK weight knit with an appropriate size needle to a gauge of 22 stitches in 4 inches produces a men’s size large mitten."

Very simple project using the seed stitch so the edges don't curl.

How to knit the Scandinavian way - Basics of knitting      (youtu.be)

I had been knitting the regular American way for a couple of years before I came across these guys' videos.

Knitting the Scandinavian way is so much easier because you don't have to 'throw' your yarn onto the needle (those who knit will know). And purling the Scandinavian way is much easier and actually fun!

So if you try out knitting, I highly recommend learning the Norwegian/Scandi way.

From the video description:

"Learn the basic of knittings, how to knit and purl and how to increase and decrease, and we will have you knitting in no time!

It was at a function celebrating textile arts. I was struck at how human he looks here.
