Having a router based VPN is great for devices you never want to access from your home IP address. Great way to be sure there is no way the device can subvert your privacy efforts.
It isn't about saving the corporations money. It is about being courteous to other customers that go there. We all have to buy toilet paper from somewhere. I don't want a shopping cart taking up a parking space I need or rolling through the parking lot damaging my car.
I don't see how returning a shopping cart saves the corporation money anyway. They have employees to bring the carts back to the store from the cart corrals. The only way you could stick it to the corporation would be to push that cart all the way off the lot so they'd have to replace it.
