I am betting it's is for war to cover the failed fed monetary system. Remove future prospects of wife and kids and a home from the current "draft age" population to make it easier to conscript them for WWIII. It is the only reason I can think of why they would intentionally destroy this country.

Because you have to install Linux yourself (for the most part). ChromeOS (Linux that transitioned) took off because you could go to a store and pick one up. Perhaps Mint or System76 or the like will get popular (or brave enough) to team up with Target or BestBuy.
