Yeah, it's probably a simple agreement with nature. They have nerve endings in their shells though, so they feel it if a curious human touches their back or a gator scoops them up and takes a crunch. Probably spend a lot of time looking up though, so that's pretty neat.

There's something like eight species of aquatic turtles that you're allowed to harvest in Florida, and turtle traps are relatively simple in function and can harvest several a day. I've never taken any turtle for meat, but in a pinch I know exactly where to find them.
