Only if they bought in during the latest bubble. Otherwise they're not losing anything, they just end up with smaller unrealized capital gains. Even that's only an issue if they bought beyond their means and have a poor loan to value ratio, so they've already spent more on interest than they have in equity.

That said, real estate and especially real property absolutely should appreciate under an inflationary currency. Otherwise there would be a wealth disadvantage to ownership, because maintenance is expensive.

Our govt has been “taking steps” to resolve housing unaffordability since 2002. Every parliament Inquiry is inconclusive and they’ve been running a pretence of fixing the issue for two decades without any idea of a solution.
It’s all a scam, property is now and investment portfolio, we will own nothing.
