Most people are tech illiterate. Generation barely comes into it. It's similar to cars. Everybody drives one, almost no one knows much of what's under the hood.
That's false. The main reason many older generations know more about cars, and many earlier generations know more about computers, is because that knowledge was required to use them at the time they learned. Cars in the boomer generation broke down far more often and needed more maintenance and care. Computers in the gen x years required more manual configuration and troubleshooting, and were more hardware oriented, necessitating knowledge of how the parts work together. Gen z has been presented with cars and computers that more or less operate themselves, because a market (women) existed in the past few decades for which automating everything as much as possible was necessary.
The challenge with gen z is less that they are not aware of how technology works but rather with how uninterested they are in doing so. Their lack of interest in learning anything useful, on any topic, is the real issue.
Their lack of interest is largely a product of demoralization. Imagine you were growing up at a time when the average worker hadn't received a real raise in half a century, despite worker productivity doubling during that time. Would you want to become a hard worker and keep driving worker productivity up when you get nothing more back for it? Or would you do the bare minimum to survive in a system that's designed to exploit you and give the things you produce to kikes and niggers?

Cars are a great analogy. As they became more common, people understood them less and less. Because they didn't need to. More and more, they "just worked"... and if they didn't, you would just take them to a mechanic or let the insurance take care of it. Manufacturers are also to blame, as they increasingly made it deliberately more difficult to get under the hood. The exact same happened with computers and software.
But there are definitely generational differences and trends, both with cars and computers, as a consequence of how hands-on you had to be with them, at the time when that generation was getting access to them.
It's nice to see there's a bit of a resurgence in recent years though, with things like DIY and self-hosting/IOT trending across generations.
The car thing is spot on. I remember trying to replace a headlight and the amount of crap id need to remove to get to it was ridiculous, the time, not mention tools needed was retarded, so I paid the 50 for the mechanic to do it.
Same with coding, I did coding in high school and college, I made a working, but simple game, modern software has so much bloat and garbage spaghetti code that it's way beyond me.

Older generations didn't have a magic box in their pocket that answered any question they had, whenever they have it. Older generations had to learn what to do with books and studying...retaining knowledge. Now its "lemme Google it".
It's a symptom of a much bigger problem. Gen z isn't computer illiterate, they are unaware of how to think. Like people who can't read being illiterate, and people who can't read being innumerate, people who can't think need a word for it (we never needed one before...). Something like "incerebate" works.
When i was like 17-18, i remember how older people around me praised me for my comp knowledge. Then they always said that next generations will be all comp wizards, cause then everything will be on comps. I thought that too, at that time.

Apple has only ever encouraged a hands-off attitude towards their products AKA if it breaks just buy a new one, sheep. There are plenty of videos out there that highlight how crappy Apple hardware can be, and how overpriced it is. But no body cares as long as they have the current iPhone.

I can confirm this to be true. I regularly allow my learning-disabled students to use computers and it is shocking how despite being born with technology and using it all the time, they are confused by the simplest of tasks like saving or sharing a file.
I know of a salaried tech professional with multiple degrees that wanted to reformat a computer that needed a singular registry file deleted to fix something. I never finished college.

My work computer was having intermittent display failures for a week. I work remote on the companies PC. They had top nerds on the case for 5 work days, talking me thru all sorts of shit over the phone. If it isn’t your job; there is no way a normal person can be up to date on all this hardware and software. I still got paid for my down time, so I was pleased that they were struggling to figure it out.
there isn't much to test with that, unless windows 10 does something weird in software.
i thought it was funny at this one job when I did all the testing already for a display that didn't work, then I called IT and pretended like I was a complete idiot and they needed to come down and figure it out for me. Ok, now before they come down I know they're having a conversation in that office about "how stupid the users are and it's probably the simplest thing in the world and they're not even describing the problem correctly". So I tried to sound as dumb as possible over the phone.
They went through all the same steps and I could see the look on that guy's face just looking for something to call me stupid for. I just giggled inside while watching the peculiar look on his face as he eventually ended up taking the monitor back and bringing me a new one. I didn't tell him about all the troubleshooting I had already done; just to leave him spinning on it
Just curious OP...have you ever started a fire without matches or a lighter or flammable liquid, have you ever sourced out water in the bush where water isn't visible, have you ever went 3 months without electricity or a toilet?...have you ever killed your own food? I'm just curious is all.
Those are all more useful skills than operating Windows 11, but they are also much simpler to pick up. I think the core problem is that gen z does not see the point in learning things at all, because they take for granted the ability to look it up and have someone (in digital form) explain it to them step by step. Their inability to appreciate why this is limiting them is the fault of older generations (and jews who run your society).
It's sort of like how people say "I'll never need to do algebra in the real world!" That is true in most cases, you won't need to do algeba equations in real life. What they don't understand is that being able to do algebra equations teaches you how to think, and you use that same logical process you would in doing algebra to solve real world problems. Learning algebra makes you a better decision maker and problem solver. The connection between fundamental skills and their resulting benefits is lost completely in the modern era. This is a big part of why everything is falling apart in the West and there is almost no chance of that stopping before catastrophe strikes.
It's called roughing it. Or extended camping I suppose. I haven't done many of those in a good long while though. Still, all are important skills to learn and practice at least once in your life.
