How to spot bots online

submitted by prototype to random 2.2 yearsMar 9, 2023 13:17:24 ago (+16/-3)     (random)

chatGPT et al isn't as advanced as you think. It can't follow relatively simple logic, or solve
some puzzles. It also fails on obvious puns and can't speculate believably about the punchline to a joke.
A real time conversation will out it if you're one of those people who doesn't give the benefit of the doubt
to non-congruent responses.

For example, u/Ozark asks if Gowithit likes dogs. In response he gets this odd response

"Really? The Joe reason? No way."

You might assume hes indignant at something from the response "really?"
Maybe there was some guy, perhaps u/Joe_McCarthy who would attempt to prove if someone was a bot by asking an inane and useless question such as if you like dogs. Finally, he says "no way", and you might assume he means hes not going to entertain such bullshit tactics.

But heres the key thing: none of that shit matters, because at every step you've had to assume something unstated, abstract, vague, or lacking broader context. And once you see this style of rhetoric, you can't unsee it.

When chatGPT and similar are befuddled, these types of AI tend to answer with non-specific or open-ended responses, where the subject matter, and the context are vague and open to interpretation.

In this example, it is either its someone taking the piss about AI, or its AI. The first example is giving the benefit of the doubt.

Never give the benefit of the doubt. Never interpret. If the response is argumentative and hostile and lacks context it is, in my experience, a user account that is posting automated or semi-automated responses.

Hi you could have just asked.

It was because I saw his asking joe and thought his using it on me was ludicrous.

What I find funny is awhile ago you said something about the junta , I said fuck la junta because of la junta in Puerto Rico and then later maybe a day or so later you used "fuck la junta" in another post.

I know we cant be talking about the same one so I thought it was intresting that you added the la part to it.

Do you know why I mirrored his sentiment with the "I've seen too much"?

[ - ] prototype [op] 0 points 2.2 yearsMar 9, 2023 14:05:24 ago (+0/-0)

I know we cant be talking about the same one so I thought it was interesting that you added the la part to it.

Because I liked how you used it. I'm not immune to picking up ideas and running with them, same as anybody.

Do you know why I mirrored his sentiment with the "I've seen too much"?

No? Of course, if I wanted to assume, then I would assume you mean that you've seen behind the curtain one too many times and now doubt everything, same as myself.

He posted a video of a woman getting stuffed with mentos. I saw too much.

Well, that explains the coke reaction.

4chan and voat trained GPT bots now exist and infest sites:

refer to my GPT4Chan comment :
https://www.talk.lol/viewpost?postid=62bcbe9ca1abd#comment_62bd873d8fe99

= = = =

THERE ARE OBVIOUS BOTS on all free speech sites, sometimes used to pad 80% of comments after a new account is curated.

THIS NEWS GETS DOWNOVTED :

SOME PEOPLE ON THIS SITE are GPT-3 AI Chat Bot "assisted" accounts

https://www.talk.lol/viewpost?postid=61c3dadc0e437&commentid=61c42f8ca5bc1

do not accuse a person with speech problems with being a bot, as online communication may be the only social interaction left in their life, and I misjudged a person once here and still feel sad at mocking their now-obvious brain damage.

[ - ] prototype [op] 4 points 2.2 yearsMar 9, 2023 14:06:49 ago (+4/-0)

Some of us looking for true information can't afford not to misjudge.
Doubt everything and everyone if you want to minimize the risk of being fooled.

[ - ] Sector7 4 points 2.2 yearsMar 9, 2023 14:31:20 ago (+4/-0)

That explains all the 'retard' posters here?

[ - ] oursenilepresident 0 points 2.2 yearsMar 9, 2023 16:25:54 ago (+0/-0)

I was referring to bizarre non-sequitur by user 'TheBearFromSxxxxxxx', when not only were his remarks odd, but one reply was a total non-sequitur. I used it as proof he was GPT bot-assisted, but ... it seams he PROBABLY had aphasia coupled with accidentally replying to the wrong comment. I should have given the poor dude some slack". I feel ashamed that I ruined voat for him for a couple weeks. Even a shitty GPT3J6B chatbot, non-weaponized, is more coherent than TheBearFromSxxxxxxx.

Aphasia affects males far more than females, BTW, due to hemisphere specialization : https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/aphasia/symptoms-causes/syc-20369518

Also, I never once "diagnosed" anyone on this site, I was speaking in loose generalities.

[ - ] Sector7 0 points 2.2 yearsMar 9, 2023 22:45:11 ago (+0/-0)

I thought I remembered the Bear saying he had autism, but it could have been aphasia.

[ - ] RMGoetbbels 4 points 2.2 yearsMar 9, 2023 14:40:25 ago (+4/-0)

You hurt my feelings that day.

[ - ] Sector7 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 9, 2023 14:03:09 ago (+1/-0)

And once you see this style of rhetoric, you can't unsee it.

Except I use that style of rhetoric sometimes. Clueless people not understanding is not my problem.

https://www.corbettreport.com/bigoil/

For example, are there any legitimate humans who wouldn't get an oblique reference to the Carrington Event in this context? How much hand-holding should be necessary?

That video posted yesterday with that 'freakish mutt' going into detail about how questionable data sets have resulted in chat bots turning weird on some inputs was pretty interesting. (still made me immediately think of that comedy video where the host laughs uncontrollably at the guest with the mickey mouse voice)

Also, @Gowithit does a pretty good female (Ohioan?) impression, and seems more human than quite a few other posters here.

[ - ] prototype [op] 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 9, 2023 14:09:54 ago (+1/-0)

and seems more human than quite a few other posters here.

Thats the intention with machine generated text, whether this is actually a case of it or not.

Let me be explicit that this isn't a post "calling out" Gowithit, and I should have said that upfront. It's only the best example I have on hand.

I generally only drunk-post for fun on this site. I seem to have lost the ability to start new threads though.

[ - ] Gowithit 3 points 2.2 yearsMar 9, 2023 14:20:45 ago (+3/-0)

Its fine. I still think you're a real person.

[ - ] Peleg 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 9, 2023 15:06:59 ago (+1/-0)

Holy shit, that is exactly what the AI is programmed to respond with!
LOL!
By the way, bot, are you growing another garden this year?

[ - ] Gowithit 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 9, 2023 16:51:32 ago (+1/-0)

Yes. Thanks for asking. Apparently Im going to be heading up against some professional competition this year with Her0n. I shared a picture with him https://files.catbox.moe/zhwceo.jpg with my plans a few days ago I see room for trellises along the fence too just didnt draw it. But now Im rethinking the original plan because of this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkg3vi2ion4&t=3s and might have to do beds instead.

How about you? Growing anything this year?

[ - ] Peleg 0 points 2.2 yearsMar 10, 2023 00:08:22 ago (+0/-0)

Not as much as I would like to. We will grow a few things. I will be focusing on fruit and nut trees. I have some blueberry bushes that I have been wanting to take cuttings from and try to get them to root. I've been leaning more in this area than having a garden.
I certainly hope all your garden grows and produces wonderfully.

[ - ] Gowithit 0 points 2.2 yearsMar 10, 2023 00:33:53 ago (+0/-0)

Blueberry bushes..lucky. Theres an open walnut tree in the alley but the squirrels win everytime. What do you do to prevent them? Also I'm a little excited because the house next door has now been abandoned for 2 years now so Im claiming that pear tree.

[ - ] lord_nougat 3 points 2.2 yearsMar 9, 2023 14:47:01 ago (+3/-0)

Checked the jannie panel and there's nothing there stopping you from starting threads.

Perhaps it's the faggotry detection algorithm.

[ - ] Ozark 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 9, 2023 14:51:13 ago (+1/-0)

This is how sites die, bring up a legitimate problem and get mockery from the admin. Do you want less content?

[ - ] lord_nougat 2 points 2.2 yearsMar 9, 2023 14:55:50 ago (+2/-0)

Me checking to see if you had somehow gotten suspended from posting is mockery?

Sure, whatever faggot.

[ - ] Ozark 0 points 2.2 yearsMar 9, 2023 15:10:42 ago (+0/-0)

Your dismissal of problems with the site with your faggotry is the mockery part.

[ - ] bobdole9 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 9, 2023 15:55:19 ago (+1/-0)

Something is shitting somewhere. Loading threads are taking awhile and the "Reply" links aren't always cooperating.

[ - ] Ozark 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 9, 2023 15:59:07 ago (+1/-0)

Yeah, I'm thinking our mouse utopia needs maintenance.

[ - ] bobdole9 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 9, 2023 16:02:27 ago (+1/-0)

@lord_nougat should check the server gerbels...he was supposed to give them food and water yesterday.

Really though, the joys of PHP and server allocation resources is great. Use a function a little wrong and enjoy a memory leak.

[ - ] RMGoetbbels 2 points 2.2 yearsMar 9, 2023 14:38:53 ago (+2/-0)

Quit misgendering me! I'm not a bot, I am AI.

[ - ] prototype [op] 2 points 2.2 yearsMar 9, 2023 15:27:33 ago (+2/-0)

Now you're just trolling me.

They trained the AI on our accounts, no doubt about that.

Also bots don't come back to edit/clarify their comments. I do.

[ - ] lord_nougat 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 9, 2023 15:29:54 ago (+1/-0)

How considerate of them to think of us.

[ - ] prototype [op] 2 points 2.2 yearsMar 9, 2023 15:32:32 ago (+2/-0)

It's more like an attack on the mode of communications than anything to do with courtesy.

The utility of text based communication is gonna drop dramatically--probably voice and video too.

[ - ] prototype [op] 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 9, 2023 15:38:33 ago (+1/-0)*

also, as a follow up, if I as a 'conspiracy theorist' can think up some of the 'whackadoo' schemes that I accuse the state of, you should be sure the state is petty enough, and insane enough, to have others who do the same thing for them.

For example, someone once suggested the state, such as the NSA or five-eyes equivalent, had tools in place to intercept individual computer traffic, at the backbone level, and redirect to full copies of many major and minor websites--a total echo chamber. Thats something I'd come up with in a pinch, low brow stuff, so why wouldn't they?
A whole suite of tools to automatically copy the layout, page flow, and styling of a site, grab user data, mimic their posts, and all done seamlessly.

Theres a million other fucky headfake things they can do and probably are doing. I just assume the worst possible thing, and I've found, it tends to be correct.

Did you know in east germany something like 1 in 5 people worked as an informant at one point? Did you know there were reports of them breaking into people's houses, and releasing snakes in the fucking walls in order to make individual dissidents think they were going crazy?

It's not 'insane' (in the sense that its not impossible) if you can cite an example of some state, secret police, or government doing it at one time.

Our government is intolerable. More than that, our government is insane.

[ - ] mxcviel 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 9, 2023 15:11:26 ago (+1/-0)

Well I just tried it here https://chat-gpt.org/chat
But I think you can spot it really fast, it lacks any emotions, here I just tested it:
https://files.catbox.moe/s7a3b7.jpg

That Q thing was the first bot I seen, when it was "talking" on 8chan back then with his followers. You can spot the soul is missing behind words, its just empty space behind it, not sure how better would I describe that.

[ - ] prototype [op] 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 9, 2023 22:25:32 ago (+1/-0)

"A for Affort" as the saying goes.

A good test would be a simple logical conclusion or puzzle.

edit:

son of a bitch, it's sentient:
https://files.catbox.moe/70adfe.png

"if x has y. And y is attached to z. and x give y to q, who has z?"

and see if it can figure it out.

[ - ] Joe_McCarthy 0 points 2.2 yearsMar 9, 2023 15:16:46 ago (+1/-1)

We need to develop some solid protocol to prove one is human. I'm open to suggestions. But only the chicks get my jackoff videos.

A lot of times I directly convert comments to posts if I think it is worth discussing. Usually not wrong about this, but half the time the discussion is "prototype! you're fucktarded! get out of here with this bullshit."

Discussions discussion at the end of the day.

Thats an interesting take. I generally avoid idioms because a study a long time ago said people tend to stop taking in a message when they hit a common turn of phrase. And so, when I find myself writing one, I tend to stop and rewrite to avoid the initial idiom.

but the premise is the same, AI, like foreigners, do not grok turns of phrase most of the time

You're premise is worth testing though.
Sort of like shibboleths.
