What is the best insect repellent available these days?

submitted by TheViciousMrPim to whatever 2.8 yearsJul 19, 2022 05:20:01 ago (+3/-0)     (whatever)

I plan on spending some time outdoors this summer. What is the best repellent we can buy (or make?) these days?

Permithrin. Its okay for dogs but will kill your cat. I just dont sweat or exhale very much to keep from getting ticks and mosquitos.

You just decide not to sweat much when in the outdoors?

I focus on it through intense meditation. Its the same technique Steven Seagal uses.

Ticks are a nightmare as are midges. Midges may be slightly worse.

Pyrethrin and it's chemical equivalent permithrin are known to cause cancer.

You should just spray it on your clothes and shoes.

Careful using DEET. It repels mosquitoes well, but it destroys plastic and glass. I ruined a nice watch years ago by getting a small amount of deet spray on it. Etched the glass crystal and ruined the rubbery plastic on the bezel. Doesn't even have a warning about that on the package.

And it stinks to high heaven. Use it once and the smell will linger in your nose for days. Nasty.

I've heard these work well: https://www.thermacell.com/products/mr300-repeller

If you're looking for a spray, when I use it the one I use is Off! with picaridin, and I only spray it on my clothes. That said, I rarely use bug spray. I just deal with the little fuckers like Nature intended. It's part of the experience.

I'm primarily concerned w ticks not skeeters. I'd forgotten those things existed though, so thanks for that link suggestion.

Spray with picaridin should help with ticks.

Ben’s 100.

Use nothing, just check your body after a hike. You should be doing this if you have spray or not, so just cut out the chemicals.

We have found maybe 10 ticks on us this year.

I can respect this, but I am going to be in a single spot for an extended period. A static target, not hiking. And it could range from woods to grassy wet areas. I think I'm going to engage in some proactive chemical warfare against the bugs.

Make a couple ovitraps. I use them to control mosquitoes in a damp wooded area around our lake home in MN. Surprisingly effective.

I can respect this, but I am going to be in a single spot for an extended period.

There was a spot where I used to hunt Turkey when I lived in CA. Outstanding natural blind. Unfortunately, the place was crawling with ticks. I'm talking like in the hundreds. I've never seen so many in one place before or since.

The first time I went out with a buddy of mine, we must have pulled at least 40 ticks each off of ourselves when we got back to the truck. Somehow, no one got bit, which was a blessing.

Anyway, on subsequent journeys, I applied a natural formulation using essential oils and that seemed to work well. Don't have the bottle with me and most of the offerings I've seen use essentially the same botanicals (lemongrass, etc.).

There's probably nothing that's foolproof but I'm gunna tell you about a little fix that works if you get bitten and itch like crazy - even though I think you're an arsehole.

And it is...a blowdryer (hairdryer). Just aim it at the bite for as long as you can bear without being silly about it and maybe repeat the process another two times and particularly before bed. I find it a great relief. Among other effects, the hot air performs the same function as you scratching the itch but without the damaging effect and its very satisfying.

Just got a German Shepard puppy born on a ranch. She’s crawling with ticks. I’ve been plucking them off like crazy. We have a tick collar on her now. I even found one on me. When my wife got one, I went nuclear. Bug bombed the house tick powder on the floors. I’m going to win this war.

"I’m going to win this war.".

Nothing defeats a tick, not even a HIMAR. The wretched things at our place are microscopic but boy do they pack a punch!

Put one in a jar once and it stayed alive for a long time with no water.

It was unnatural.

[ - ] Thatguy 1 point 2.8 yearsJul 19, 2022 06:25:12 ago (+1/-0)

She gets a daily tick inspection. She loves it. Scratching and petting her body. Happy German Shepard.

Lol, I thought you were talking about your wife.

Smoke.

[ - ] TheViciousMrPim [op] 0 points 2.8 yearsJul 20, 2022 05:46:50 ago (+0/-0)

This is an interesting suggestion. Smoke definitely works. It's just not very portable, a fire pit isn't welcome everywhere. I wonder which chemical it is which makes smoke work? I mean, not just any smoke works. Or maybe it's a constant supply of any smoke...idk

Interesting suggestion anyway

[ - ] TheViciousMrPim [op] 0 points 2.8 yearsJul 19, 2022 14:32:03 ago (+0/-0)

This sounds like some weird antisemitic thing. 'yo, eat garlic shlomo'
