Watership Down

submitted by TheViciousMrPim to whatever 1.8 yearsJul 9, 2022 22:27:07 ago (+31/-0)     (whatever)

I want to recommend this book to anyone who has never read it and parents who want... This is hard, Watership isn't an easy book exactly, but it's a real book. It hits hard subjects in a way that's understandable for kids. But it's basically a kids book.

Except by the end you'll be very invested in the warren yourself.

I can't think of any ProCommunism things... They flee and destroy the wire warren... honestly, It's very pro-self reliance. There are a number of scenes where they think themselves out of problems

Watership Down is... Great. You should read it and read it to your kids.

I'm pretty sure the original film traumatized me when I was a child.

I read it in the fifth grade I think. And then we watched the movie in class. Many bunnies died. I seriously can not handle that movie to this day. Cuz bunnies dying.

Its a good book though. If you can handle the life-long emotional scars I still carry to this day. From the dead bunnies. I’m okay though. Now. But it’s been a journey. sigh.

It's surprisingly hard. I'm a dude. I was not really prepared. Bunnies are bad ass though. And the lore is, thick

I think maybe some of the political implications were over my head at the time.

I read it in 1978 but it was over my head. I saw the film in 1979 and like others here it slightly traumatized me with the dying bunnies. But its been decades, so I think I ought to give both the book and the film another chances. I do remember the film being one of the best animated features I'd ever seen. It was remarkably well done.

I gave you an upvote for the recommendation.

Read the book. It's not that long and it, it's better. The dying bunnies are slightly More traumatizing!

remember theyre a parasite that outbreed everything else around them and destroy market gardens and poof the trauma goes away.

you wont get any sympathy from anyone who lives in any semi rural area.

'cant think of any procommunism things'

its a movie that tries to make you feel bad for wiping out a feral parasite.

for those who havent seen it, its about myxomitosis being used to wipe out rabbits which are fucking feral in australia to the point we actually have a damn fence running across the northern territory. so given that communism is all about giving parasites all the power and gaslighting everyone else into handing over that power id say its very much pro communist.

that fence was then used to make a movie 'rabbit proof fence' to make australians feel bad about feral nogs and minimize their behaviour. more communist gaslighting.

remember boys and girls, hollywood doesnt make movies to make you cry, it makes them to tell the truth about what theyre doing to you while posing it as fiction.

"Its just a movie, it cant hurt you" - can and do.

I think maybe you're confusing this w a different movie. Probably 'Rabbit Fence', but I've never watched that so I'm not sure.

I have no issue w people hating rabbits as vermin. I understand their view and why they hold it. It absolutely fine w me if you slaughter hundreds of rabbits.

But, what you describe isn't Watership Down

I think rabbit fence was about wiping out the abos. But it does try to make you feel bad about it.

[ - ] TheViciousMrPim [op] 0 points 1.8 yearsJul 10, 2022 06:18:51 ago (+0/-0)

idk. I haven't watched that one so I'm not sure. But what he is describing isn't WD.

I'm still relatively certain what he is talking about is Rabbit Fence.

Lol wrong movie.

Watership Down spent a plentitude of time on Time Magazine best seller lists in the early 1970's without anyone ever disclosing it was about personalized rabbits, which I only found out after purchasing a copy in any case, despite reading it most of the way thru I felt I had been "suckered in."

[ - ] i_scream_trucks 2 points 1.8 yearsJul 10, 2022 01:21:41 ago (+2/-0)

more to the point, it was personalizing rabbits who are a feral invasive species in many places around the world and gaslighting you into feeling bad about saving your garden.

Watership down
The dark crystal (both the movie and the show)
Plague dogs
Miyazaki films
Grave of the fireflies

I love them all, hope my boy does too.

I thought it looked beautifully animated do I put the movie on for my kid. I soon realised I had seen it but buried the memory of it. My kid got scared so we turned it off. I never finished it.

[ - ] GrayDragon 1 point 1.8 yearsJul 9, 2022 23:56:04 ago (+1/-0)

I guess I should read the book. I saw the film as a kid, and like others on here, I was shocked at what I was watching. I also thought it was fantastic.

A Goat here wrote a novel that he called "Watership Down, but with kobolds instead of bunnies".

https://www.amazon.com/Heroes-Unwanted-Grim-G-Flesh/dp/B099TTTR2K/ref=sr_1_1?crid=13XCWQ9VFOO41&keywords=heroes%2C+unwanted+grim&qid=1657466151&sprefix=heroes%2C+unwanted+grim%2Caps%2C68&sr=8-1

He self-published and self-edited. There are a few errors nearer the end, you could tell he was tired and getting a bit sloppy, but if you can get past some grammatical errors, I recommend it.

[ - ] Wolfspider 0 points 1.8 yearsJul 10, 2022 09:16:28 ago (+0/-0)

I read it three times in my early teens.
