I don't even fully understand what's happened to me. Maybe it's the result of what's happened to me here (old and new VOAT), or maybe it's what I've seen happen over the last few years, but I feel totally different about this kind of thing now. You have my sympathies, of course, but I can't dwell on death as much as I used to anymore. I have a dog of my own with a short lifespan, and I know that I'm going to be heartbroken when she's gone, but I also know that I'll bounce back fairly quick because I genuinely loved her throughout her entire life and I treated her better than family because there were days that I felt that she was only real family that I had that loved me without conditions. When she's gone, I'll be sad, but then, I'll be happy knowing that she lived the best life possible, with someone who loved her for her love that she gave back. And I'll always have the funny pictures and moments of her that I'll treasure.
So, here's the best part of losing one dog. You get to go choose another one to help you move on. And they'll be just as happy to see you everyday as your previous one was right before.

I feel the same way. Dogs are gift to us, and we must appreciate them. My dogs have always been a bellwether for my trust in people who come by the house. They have such short lives, and we become so bonded to them, so it just gives us more sorrow when they leave. I still mourn dogs I knew four decades ago because they were special and good friends. Again, my deepest condolences.
That's rough. My wife and I got six Australian Sheppard puppies at the same time, sixteen years ago. They've been passing of old age about 6 months apart. I've got two left.

Don't give up. Losing a loved dog is as heart breaking as it gets next to children and spouses. He watched my wife get pregnant, followed her around, and then protected my daughter from all threats fiercely. An excellent guard, and best friend.
This will get better with time, reflect fondly and spread that joy and love that you shared with her to others around you.
They become our family, don't they, and their passing is as hard as the loss of people in our lives. I've had many dogs. If it weren't for dogs my life would've been much different (for the worst). When my dogs die I try to get another dog asap. Not only does it help with the grief, it is a homage to all the dogs I've had. Get another dog when you're ready. Everyone needs a best friend.
