It sounded like a black lab. I tend to avoid dogs that are not puppies though, hard to build the trust once they've grown to adults and with the short life span it's difficult to bond back.
My last pup lasted about 12 years, rescued out of the mountains. He went through my wife's pregnancy and guarded the kids better than any one but their parents could.
