I always laugh at these idiots with "smart" everything.

They think they are so high tech yet understand so little about the mechanisms behind these surveillance devices

I've always been the "tech guy" in just about any group. People can sometimes be surprised by how little tech I actually own, and how much less of it I actually use on the daily. Most of what I have is for experimenting and fucking around/learning new shit.

Always keep important shit off the internet and not able to connect to anything. No smart fridges, no smart ac, no smart heat, no smart water.

No matter how secure the damned things are (and they fucking aren't), some random pony-fucking retard sitting in his basement and drooling into his own dick-cheese will, by sheer stupid stubbornness, accidentally push the exact sequence of buttons to find a way to break them. Then he'll somehow break half of them across the world at exactly the wrong time just because his tendie delivery service was 5 minutes late.

If you understand technology, you know exactly why smart automation BS shouldn't be rapidly adopted.

I'm also the tech guy in my group. Always the one to spend thousands of dollars on new PC equipment and such. That said, even if IOT wasn't insecure as fuck, I really don't see the point. It seems absolutely retarded to me. Why the fuck does my fridge or AC need to be connected to the internet? What's the benefit? I don't see any.

So you can control them remotely with your phone or some bullshit. Check the contents of your fridge while at the store. Set the thermostat lower before you leave work. As if any of that is necessary or particularly useful.

In other words, to make someone even more lazy and shiftless than he already is....and even more dependent on convenience.

I guess I shouldn’t get that WiFi enabled bidet my wife wants….

Yeah man, and the shock people go into when I laugh at their smart devices and explain how insecure it all is. Then they double down with "why would anyone care about what I'm doing, I'm not special, they aren't tracking me." Or, "I don't care they track me, I like targeted advertisements".

Also, "well my phone is already tracking me, so more devices can't hurt"

People are fucking nuts

Neat new way of doing warfare.

Cold enough to kill? Off goes the heater. No need to thank me. You being in massive financial debt to me for years is more than enough.

Hot enough to kill? Off goes the AC. We may or may not have bumped your electric bill to absurd highs this time too. Being a corporate slave for life isnt so bad. Just make sure to survive until the debt is paid. Debt is inherited you know.

By the way I hope you like meeting new people because youre getting infinite immigrants with priority on employment. Same as the old problem but even worse now.

All of which started when billionaires from California started immigrating to Texas and there was talk about succession. Coincidence?

It's not the smart thermostat, it's the contract these people signed with their power companies.

Much like the deal people get into with their car insurance, where the insurance company puts a device on their car's OBD-II port to read the car's speed/control/etc, and the customer gets a deal on their monthly insurance for "safe driving."

These idiot people signed a contract with their power company for this. The power company can turn their compressors off during times of low use (work, vacation, etc) to save money, passing that savings on to the customer, and turn it back up when the customer is home. And now that the power company is exercising their contractual right to do this, the customers are complaining... I don't get it.

Oh, you get it. They wanted something for nothing and don't want to live with the consequences when the bill comes due.

The idiots were warned about "smart home" technology, but those who warned them were dismissed as "conspiracy theorists". #Nelsonlaugh

Omg what absolute retards.

Just replace it.

[ - ] Nosferatjew 1 point 2.9 yearsJun 19, 2021 17:06:57 ago (+1/-0)*

Ikr. These tards are so lazy, the moment they acquire some perceived convenience, they can't imagine life without it.

Then they bought a wiretap and connected their CCTV too.

[ - ] In_Cog_Nito 2 points 2.9 yearsJun 19, 2021 10:01:58 ago (+2/-0)*

They also opted-in to the utility provider's program without understanding said program. Total fucking idiot.

Fucking retards signing a contract and using the power companies “free” WiFi smart thermostat.

Get what they deserve for always reeeing about oh no that’s just a conspiracy they’d never do that. Fuck them.

oh fuck

[ - ] yesiknow 0 points 2.9 yearsJun 19, 2021 05:51:09 ago (+0/-0)

Texas has it's own grid, and the contractors have probably been sabotaging themselves to get Texas dependent on the north american grid.

[ - ] Broc_Liath 0 points 2.9 yearsJun 19, 2021 04:50:12 ago (+0/-0)

Devil's advocate: There's something like this where I live, there's a separate circuit you can buy cheap power from during periods of low demand (usually night). If you have a storage heater it's a good way to save money.

Could that be what this is about?

[ - ] Cantaloupe 2 points 2.9 yearsJun 19, 2021 12:21:38 ago (+2/-0)

That's smart, but no not this. They probably sign a contract where they agreed to use less energy during periods of high demand - remotely controlled.
