Self-hosted or public node and if the latter, which one? The known public ones get blocked by the search engines they steal from, so you get nothing returned and self-hosted means all your searches are tied to yourself, unless you have other users somehow.
Public, and whichever ones are in rotation with good security. Nodes change over time and at least for me, it's been effective for finding content that I otherwise can't turn up.
I would take issue with the term "stealing" since it's essentially the same process that e.g. DuckDuckGo uses for a lot of results, and nobody accuses them of theft for it.
All the public nodes I found do not return search results because the original search engine blocked them. They return the error "too many searches" instead. Calling it stealing was tongue in cheek, but essentially that's what it is.
I guess Google cares more that you receive the results they prepared, no matter which site you use than that some sites are stealing their results. If they raise a stink, their competition would have to actually compete on doing the search thing. It would also open them up for lawsuits of newspapers, since Google steals their headlines to do what it does. It's just lose-lose all around.
