SO I use a ASUS RT-AC5300 ($349.99) hacked with custom firmware, plus another little router in front of THAT with Tomato Firmware on it. internet goes through two routers, and asus cant update itself, nor can Tomato Firmware

Lots of fancy ways to do it, but using WIRES, this is common way :

- Modem to WAN Port of Router1
-- Router1 LAN Port to WAN port of Router2
--- Router2 LAN Ports to networked devices (PCs, switches, NAS, etc.)

doing these things without wires , just radio, is a nightmare usually, but not impossible

wan to wan ensures NAT magically works for things that tickle out

you do all your "port forwarding" on the final router as well as adjustments to prioritize your VOIP devices packets

my setup is actually more complex than the above discussion because ASUS RT-AC5300 has DUAL pathway DUAL WANS to use two connections to the internet to double packets and double redundancy if one path goes down.

I've been using Linksys Velop for whole - house mesh coverage. IDK if it's featureful -- I'm using it in bridged mode -- but it was stupid easy to setup and gets great signal and speed. Two nodes. I have one upstairs and one downstairs. NO wired backhaul.

I would only use a wired-only router (lacking any wifi capability), so that limits brands I would recommend to MikroTik, Ubiquiti, and a very few others. I have used MikroTik for the past three years, and credit its hardware firewall with my XP Pro remaining bulletproof. I had to pay a computer tech a hundred bucks to come by to set it up (RouterOS is notoriously hard to set up the NAT & SPI), but I'd consider it well worth the price. That said, all these have backdoor vulnerabilities...I know of no brand that don't.

I bought the cheapest one with the appropriate specs.

Haven't had a problem.

Didn't read reviews. I think it's a Netgear.

And I don't remember the specs, but it has 3 antennae ... so I got that going for me; which is nice.

Edit: but I can't answer a phone call anywhere near it for some reason. I can't hear, but the caller can. Just one of those things, ya know?

Set yourself up a pfsense box. It'll take you less than an hour even with zero experience.

Use Netgear pro stuff. The metal navy blue equipment only.

If your doing real business installs look into Unifi products. The learning curve is minor and they can scale from a few people to thosands of users.

Linksys was amazing prior to cisco buying them.

In general even on consumer grade stuff. I only deploy equipment that can run DDWRT.

I've had DDWRT in commercial installs lasting over 15 years.

I really liked the Asus Nighthawk series but if your going to shell out $200 might as well go Edge router and Unifi.

Linksys. Put ddwrt on it. All consumer routers are trash. Make sure what ever you buy is supported on ddwrt or openwrt.
